The secret of Mercadona’s green boxes: what they mean and why they are special

The supermarket chain Mercadona It continues to be one of the most popular among Spaniards to make their purchases. All their establishments share the same aesthetics and distribution of their products, and among other elements that stand out in their supermarkets are the green boxes with which fruits and vegetables are displayed.

The choice of these boxes is not coincidental, as explained by Mercadona in a recent statement. Beyond being simple containers, these boxes they are reusable and they are used both to transport and display the fruit and vegetables that the customers of this supermarket later buy.

The manufacturer of these boxes is Logifruit, a logistics provider for Mercadona for more than 25 years, details the Valencian chain. The objective of these boxes falls within the commitment of the company chaired by Juan Roig for “a business model that is more respectful of the environment,” they indicate.

For this reason, the green boxes that can be seen in the fruit section are reusable when allow more than 120 usesThey are foldable, repairable and made of recyclable plastic, which allows them to last an average of 5 years.

This is a sustainability model, with which Mercadona has calculated that it has contributed to avoid the use of more than 200,000 tons of raw materials per year.

Furthermore, by using these green boxes the need to make more than 107,072 truck trips per year is avoided, which contributes to reduce COâ‚‚ emissions.

Linked to this reduction of the carbon footprint is also the fact that they are folding boxes which allow up to three times more boxes to be transported per truck compared to rigid boxes, says Mercadona.

The Valencian chain has also indicated that after each use, each of the boxes goes “through a rigorous cleaning and disinfection process“, if necessary they are repaired, and at the end of their useful life are recycled to become new boxes, an example of what is known as a circular economy model.
