Worst WCW Factions

WCW had many outstanding factions, like the New World Order and Four Horsemen, who helped form the landscape of fans wanting more group acts. The impact of WCW’s best stables also saw other ideas not working as well. WCW attempted to build more factions as the years went by, but not all panned out.

The worst of the worst ideas or executions caused the talents involved to fall behind. Eric Bischoff, Vince Russo, Ric Flair, Bill Watts, and others spent time leading the creative efforts. Each scenario will be showcased to figure out what caused the failure. The following factions were the worst groups in WCW history.

WCW tried to reset the entire product by ending all storylines and vacating all titles to make fans want to give them a fresh start. The big new angle featured most of the wrestlers forming the New Blood with the goal of taking down the established main event veterans.

This could have been like an Avengers-like storyline of Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Sting, Kevin Nash, Diamond Dallas Page and other legends forming a unit. Unfortunately, every stage of the New Blood vs Millionaire’s Club story flopped to hurt the faction’s chances of success.

9 The Mamalukes Was A Bad Rip Off Of ECW Act

WCW pushed a new act of the Mamalukes in 2000 with Big Vito and Johnny the Bull as the main tag team. Tony Mamaluke joined WCW from ECW to bring a familiar player from ECW’s Full-Blooded Italians faction.

The Mamalukes was meant to play into the Italian backgrounds of the wrestlers involved to become hated heels. A tag title push didn’t do much to get them established in wrestling. WWE didn’t use Vito or Johnny right away when WCW was purchased due to their lackluster results at this time.

Alex Wright and Disco Inferno were playing similar characters as lower mid-card heels that relied on dancing for heel heat. WCW eventually added Tokyo Magnum to the act to provide more dancing and comedy work as a third member, outside of the ring.

The Dancing Fools had a short run together, but they never got past the lower mid-card picture. WCW was content with them getting booed and heckled to provide depth. However, the act ended with none of them accomplishing much in that time.

WCW hoped that embracing the reality of the younger talents resenting the veterans holding down the top spots by creating the New Blood. Names like Jeff Jarrett, Vampiro, Shane Douglas and Billy Kidman received pushes defeating the legends.

Vince Russo and Eric Bischoff hated working together, and it showed when the New Blood missed the mark as their top project. The young guys all acting like heels took away from the end game of them getting over with awful feud after awful feud.

6 Team Madness Was Randy Savage’s Biggest Miss

Randy Savage returned from an injury with a new presentation after the New World Order ended in his absence. The new act saw Savage having three valets of Madusa, Molly Holly and Gorgeous George at his side while he tried to come off younger than he was.

Sid Vicious joined Savage to make it an official faction since they competed together against common enemies. The summer of 1999 saw WCW falling apart with negative momentum, and this main event act flopped badly to continue the trend downhill.

5 NWO B-Team Represented The Worst Of The New World Order

The New World Order dominated WCW from mid-1996 to early-1999 as the top overall act. WCW took a huge risk splitting the NWO into two camps of the Hollywood and Wolfpac sides. This worked better than fans today realize, as the Wolfpac felt like a red-hot face version.

WCW unfortunately went a little too far when they reunited as the NWO Elite. Some of the secondary members like Brian Adams, Scott Norton, Virgil, Stevie Ray, and Horace Hogan were demoted to the NWO B-Team. The group turned into a punchline as the NWO Elite members manipulated and bossed them around.

4 Revolution Completely Tanked With Great Talents

WCW placed together Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko and Perry Saturn as the Revolution to play into their history of being underutilized. Shane Douglas joined them as the talker to call out the veterans of the promotion.

Things were moving slower than expected with the audience not warming up to them. WCW fully making them heels and adding the enforcer of Asya added more negative momentum. A parody of Chyna trying to save a group with little audience support sums up why they failed.

Eric Bischoff signed Master P to a big deal in the hopes that he’d present some mainstream appeal in the ratings battle. Unfortunately, WCW’s audience in typically Southern markets and holding an older demographic led to Master P getting booed out of the building most nights.

The No Limit Soldiers faction saw Rey Mysterio and Konnan having the matches, along with a handful of lower card wrestlers and rappers behind them. WCW witnessed Master P’s face act becoming hated for minimal results at the end of the faction.

WCW created the Dungeon of Doom to have monster heel characters working in opposition to Hulk Hogan. The Giant and Kevin Sullivan were the most pushed names meant to make the group feel important and threatening.

Monster characters like The Zodiac, The Shark, The Yeti and Kamala all missed the mark to expose the problem. Wrestling was evolving, and the Dungeon of Doom represented an outdated act. Hogan turning heel to form the New World Order partially stemmed from this concept flopping to warrant a character and presentation change.

Many fans felt insulted that WCW tried to make the Misfits in Action feel like their version of D-Generation X. The concept of playing pranks and wearing camo for their attacks led to the Misfits getting a huge face push.

WCW’s biggest problem was the talent involved having a lower ceiling. Hugh Morrus, Chavo Guerrero, Van Hammer, The Wall and Lash LeRoux were the main members of the faction. Major Gunns felt like the most over member, and that was due to the fan service eye candy segments.
