Highlights

  • WWE Women’s division lacks main event opportunities, with only 3 matches at WrestleMania 40.
  • Undertaker supports creation of Women’s mid-card titles; AEW already has TBS Championship.
  • NXT introduces Women’s North America Championship, addressing need for more gold for women wrestlers.

Under the leadership of Triple H and Endeavor, WWE has entered a new era. Everything seems to be clicking in the company, but if there is one area where things could be better, it’s the women’s division. At WrestleMania 40, there were only three women’s matches and none of them were the main event. Still, there are reasons to be hopeful. The women often main event Raw and SmackDown, such as when Bayley recently took on Naomi, or the battle royal on the latest Raw, where Becky Lynch won the Women’s World Championship vacated by Rhea Ripley due to injury.

WWE has a talented roster of women across the two main roster brands, but they only have two titles, Lynch’s on Raw, and Bayley’s WWE Women’s Championship on SmackDown, to fight for in singles competition. Many have argued that there needs to be a mid-card title for the women, and now one of WWE’s all-time greatest stars, The Undertaker, has come out in agreement. On his Six Feet Under podcast, The Undertaker said:

The division [is] deep. I would like to see a Women’s Intercontinental Champion, and possibly, because there are two brands, a Women’s US Champion

A mid-card women’s championship is not a wild idea. Even AEW has one in the TBS Championship, which was won by Jade Cargill during her run there. While she wasn’t booked well with the title, it helped to make stars out of Kris Statlander, Julia Hart, and Willow Nightingale, and now Mercedes Mone will be fighting for it as she challenges Nightingale at Double or Nothing.

WWE is actually already in the process of creating a mid-card women’s championship, not for Raw or SmackDown, but for NXT. Just a few weeks ago, at NXT Stand & Deliver, NXT General Manager Ava announced the formation of the Women’s North America Championship. Last November, WWE legend and current NXT commentator Booker T, on his Hall of Fame podcast, brought up the idea of titles for the main roster, saying:

“A lot of ladies have left NXT, and they moved to the main roster. They’re gonna need a little bit more as far as play for everybody, like I said, to have just a part of the game. Having a chance to have gold around their waist, I think it’s something that we all strive for in this business and work for, to be champion just once. So yeah, I agree.” (h/t

We can argue that the Women’s Tag Team Championship has been a failure, because the titles are rarely defended or treated like a big deal, but one or two mid-card titles can be different, as WWE has often valued singles competitors more than they do their tag teams.
