On the May 1 episode of AEW Dynamite, the Best Bout Machine, Kenny Omega, made his return to the company he helped found. The former AEW World Champion had been absent from TV since December, as he has spent the last several months battling diverticulitis. Now, he’s back, and even though he’s not cleared to wrestle and has a long journey ahead of him, with surgery still a possibility, Omega is already talking about trying to find a way to make a comeback. While Omega is missed, with his age, history of injuries, and such a serious illness, perhaps it’s time for him to say goodbye to professional wrestling while he’s still ahead.

Back in December 2023, Kenny Omega was part of the Golden Jets with Chris Jericho. Fans weren’t excited about the pairing, but they became even less interested after one really bad promo on Dynamite. It was considered one of AEW’s worst segments and Omega, in particular, looked completely ill about the idea of being out there delivering his lines. It turned out he truly was ill, as he was battling abdominal pains so severe that the next day he was rushed to the hospital. Doctors quickly discovered that he had diverticulitis, an inflammation of the colon. Left untreated, it can cause death.
Doctors have been able to treat him and get him healthy again, but diverticulitis is still something he suffers with. On the May 1 Dynamite, in his hometown of Winnipeg, Omega made his much anticipated return to AEW TV. He spoke to the fans about his illness and how doctors told him he was a day away from dying. He also said that surgery is still a possibility, but if he has to go under the knife, then he’ll need to wear a colostomy bag for six months to a year, or possibly the rest of his life. Although he knows retirement is a possibility, if there is a one percent chance of returning to the ring, even if he’s wearing a colostomy bag, then he will wrestle again. When confronted by his long-time rival, Kazuchika Okada, Omega told him that he’d seen him in the ring in a few months. Kenny Omega looks to wrestle again, but he probably shouldn’t.

Diverticulitis might be the most severe illness Kenny Omega has gone through, but it’s not his first serious injury or ailment. With his risky style of wrestling, Omega is lucky to have never worked WWE’s grueling schedule. Instead, his matches have been more spaced out, with time to recover, but the nature of his work still caught up with him, especially so in the past few years.
In the fall of 2021, Kenny Omega was the face of AEW as their heel World Champion. After dropping the title to “Hangman” Adam Page at Full Gear, Omega stepped away to finally take care of his many injuries. At first, he had arthroscopic knee surgery, then in March 2022, he went under the knife once more to fix a hernia. If that wasn’t bad enough, he also had to deal with neck mobility issues and bouts of vertigo so bad that he could barely walk at times. Omega’s body needed to rest, and when he returned in August 2022, he was better than ever.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated last year, Kenny Omega acknowledged that “time is running thin” on his wrestling career. He has a history of considering retirement, such as a year before, in 2022, when he told the CEO Gaming Channel that he’d retire if he suffered one more injury, because he didn’t want to go through rehab again. A year before that, in 2021, came a report that Omega was in so much pain that he was seriously considering hanging up his wrestling boots. His body has been telling him for years to stop. Kenny Omega is now 40 years old. While he still looks like the Omega of old, and was still moving like him the last time we saw him in the ring, he’s also not getting any younger. Wrestling fans have already had to accept that Bryan Danielson is getting older and more injury prone, with his full-time wrestling run coming to an end soon. We might not be ready to let go of Kenny Omega too, but it would be for the best. He is not one to change his risky style, but the older he gets, the more those bumps and drops on his neck and head are going to affect him. He’s already had to deal with so much, from regular injuries, to vertigo that nearly kept him down, and now an illness that almost killed him. No one wants to see Kenny Omega seriously injured in the ring, and we also don’t want to see him as a shell of himself trying to hold on like The Undertaker did.
That doesn’t mean that Kenny Omega needs to retire today. If he can recover from diverticulitis, by all means, have one last short run with a retirement match against Okada, but then walk away. Kenny Omega is an all-time legend, one of the best technical wrestlers that ever lived, but what’s most important is that he does live a healthy life. There is still plenty he can do in the sport, from working behind the scenes in AEW, to being an onscreen character, but as painful as it is to think about, the moment to say goodbye and goodnight is near.
