Casal announces more aid for animal welfare

Andorra la VellaThe start of the 4th edition of the Ordino Livestock Fair, where dozens of people have gathered in the Camp de la Trenada car park to enjoy the traditional meeting of the local livestock.

The event was marked by the auction of the four brown bulls, which have been “selected to be the future parents of the breed in Andorra”, confirmed Betriu. Some animals that have been taken care of based on the regulations for the promotion of animal welfare, in reference to which, Casal has assured that the will is to expand it for next year, to “make it extensive to equine livestock and sheep”.

“Very happy, the weather is helping and the turnout is starting to be positive,” said Betriu. This year, the increase in Andorran cattle as well as the presence in the auctions stands out. Of the 15 livestock farms present in Ordino, around 10 have attended, as revealed by the Minister of Environment, Agriculture and Livestock. A parish where the primary sector predominates thanks to the 444 heads of cattle spread over the three sections (bovine, equine and sheep).

“The breeders do an excellent job that allows us to create a quality product, the controlled meat of Andorra which is the ‘haystack’ of our primary system,” he acknowledged. In this sense, in order to be able to look after all the animal welfare present in the country, we want to increase the current regulation, which only includes the bovine sector and represents around 150,000 euros. “This 2024 we are already working with the IRTA (Institute of Research and Agro-Food Technology) who must do the animal evaluation process for the rest of the sections” he revealed. So, the intention is to implement it during the year 2025 and, consequently, to expand the budget item.
