Tony Khan blurred the lines between kayfabe and reality by wearing a brace to sell his injuries at the NFL Draft!
It’s been a wild couple of days for Tony Khan. The AEW owner was viciously attacked on Dynamite this past Wednesday, and he was selling the effects of the attack on NFL Draft day. Khan managed to perfectly blend kayfabe and real life, creating a ton of buzz with the shocking angle that closed out this week’s episode of Dynamite. He was seen wearing a neck brace at the NFL Draft, and even got WWE commentator and ESPN analyst Pat McAfee to comment on the rival wrestling promotion’s boss.
Tony Khan Sells His AEW Beatdown And Gets Valuable Coverage From The NFL
Tony Khan couldn’t have planned it any better. Whether or not this was a long-term plan or a fortunate pivot, The Young Bucks & Jack Perry taking out AEW’s boss was perfectly timed for the NFL Draft, when millions of eyes would be watching.
Tony Khan was seen selling the effects of the attack, wearing a neck brace in the Jacksonville Jaguars draft war room alongside his father, Jaguars owner Shad Khan. In addition to his duties as owner and CEO of AEW, Khan is the Senior President of Football and Analytics for the Jaguars. After trading out of their spot, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Wide Receiver Brian Thomas Jr. at pick 23. Time will tell if this was a good move for the Jags and the Khan family, but TK’s selling was definitely a talking point.
How Kenny Omega Can Factor Into AEW’s New Elite Storyline
Kenny Omega is slated to make his return next week on AEW Dynamite for the first time in months, with The Elite likely anticipating his return.
The NFL Network’s Rich Eisen provided coverage on Tony Khan and his situation, letting the viewers at home know that he was recovering “from a devastating piledriver he received on national television” while also namedropping AEW. Whether or not it leads to a few more eyeballs on the product remains to be seen, but free publicity from the NFL surely doesn’t hurt.
Even Pat McAfee Surprisingly Got In On The Action
The NFL Network wasn’t the only news outlet to mention Tony Khan. While ESPN’s Pat McAfee is clearly a fan of pro wrestling in general, it was still surprising to see the WWE commentator focus on Tony Khan while mentioning the Meltzer Driver he suffered at the hands of his attackers this past Wednesday. It’s not the only time McAfee has shown respect to the competition, as he also praised Sting’s retirement match during WWE Raw back in February.
