IRELAND’s Shannon Sweeney has claimed 50kg light flyweight European gold today in Belgrade.
The Westport ace claimed the win against Bulgarian Zlatislava Gena Chukanova in what turned out to be a thrilling affair at Aleksandar Nikolić Hall.
Chukanova planted a whopping big right near the end of the final round, which may have swayed some judges in the gruelling bout in the Serbian capital.
But the Mayo star earned a 4-1 split decision in Serbia as she claimed top spot on the podium after her bronze medal at the Championships in 2022.
Sweeney booked her place in the 50kg final after a unanimous decision win over Armenia’s Anush Grigoryan.
The 25-year-old Irish ace was able to secure a path to the final after a 5-0 victory in the tactical scrap.
The St Anne’s BC member will also collect $15,000 after she secured Ireland’s 21st gold medal at a European Championships.
Meanwhile, Roscommon boxer Aoife O’Rourke fights Anastasiia Shamonova of Russia as she goes for gold in the European European Elite Championships 75kg final today.
The double Olympian remains on course for a third successive European middleweight crown.
