He spent more than 35 years on air, and was famously known as a presenter of RTE Radio 1’s Late Date.

He presented his final programme in December 2015 when he retired.

Ahead of his retirement he said: “I love the intimacy of radio and have enjoyed the privilege of being allowed into people’s lives and hearts every night.”

Alf was born in 1950 and worked as a DJ performing on stage before beginning his broadcasting career with RTE Radio Cork in 1979.

He presented the current affairs and arts programme Corkabout for 20 years.
