By Liam O’Loughlin and Damien McCartney

Nikita Tszyu has retained his Australian super welterweight title against Danilo Creati, surviving a brief scare to emerge victorious via unanimous decision on Wednesday.

The son of Kostya and younger brother of Tim, the 26-year-old Tszyu prodigy can continued his rise up the Aussie ranks and maintained his undefeated record.

Tszyu came out hard in the opening rounds and looked well on his way to ending the fight early, before Creati steadied to get himself back into the fight.

The fight went the distance, with just the sole knockdown in the second round.

Tzsyu emerged victorious 108-88, 99-90, 100-89, getting the nod from all three judges.

During the sixth round, Tszyu was momentarily staggered by Creati in a shocking moment, but regained his composure and saw out the remaining rounds.

“I wasn’t concerned,” he said.

“I have copped worse. I always get rocked here – I need to stop having fights in this place. It was great to go the 10 rounds and get that experience in.

“That was a tough one, he was very tricky and he could honestly take a shot.

“I felt I could have stopped him, but he kept enduring. He honestly did surprise me … he’s got toughness and I appreciate that. It’s the Italian in him.”

Tszyu moves to 9-0 for his professional career and is following a similar trajectory to his older brother, who cruised through the local circuit before making waves overseas.

When quizzed on who he would like to fight next, Tszyu gave a nonchalant response.

“Whoever my promoters and my manager puts in front of me, that’s who I’m going with,” he said.

Brock Jarvis has been touted as a potential challenger to Tszyu, with the Sydney product losing just one fight in his 22 career attempts.
