Highlights

  • Randy Orton’s iconic theme song “Voices” by Rev Theory always gets an intense crowd reaction.
  • WWE considered changing Orton’s theme, but he shut it down immediately with Triple H and Michael Hayes.
  • Some fans feel WWE’s current wrestler theme songs are boring compared to past iconic entrances.

There have been some iconic wrestling theme songs throughout the decades and one of the best is Randy Orton‘s “Voices” by Rev Theory. Whether he’s playing a babyface or a heel, “The Viper” never fails to get an intense reaction from the crowd the moment “I hear voices in my head” plays over the speakers. That was especially true when Orton made his comeback at last year’s Survivor Series as the final member of Cody Rhodes’ team for WarGames, with the Chicago crowd roaring when the song played. Shockingly, just weeks into his debut, WWE tried to change his theme song, but Randy Orton wasn’t having it.

According to Cody Brennan of Fightful, who revealed parts of the story on a live stream before he writes a full report later on Fightful Select:

“I’m seeing my Twitter absolutely blow up because I said that I was doing I was working on a Def Rebel report for less than two weeks. And so far, the only thing that I can talk about, yet obviously it’s all going to be a new report. I’m still working on it, but the one thing I can confirm now is that when Randy Orton returned, they considered a change in his theme music. At the time, I couldn’t find out who produced it. But it was supposed to be a Def Rebel-produced remix of ‘Voices’. I saw someone say on Twitter as well, Randy probably turned around and said that does not ‘work for me, brother.’ That’s essentially what happened. Randy was not having that theme. It was Randy, Triple H, and Michael Hayes. And within 10 minutes of it being played through in the arena, one of my sources went, ‘Yeah, that’s not being used.'” (h/t

Cody Brennan said Randy Orton hated the remix so much that he stopped it before there was even a full play-through.

WWE Needs Better Theme Songs

WWE has been hitting on all cylinders lately with Triple H and Endeavor in control, but there are still a few negatives that need to be worked on. While the on-screen presentation has gotten much better, many fans still complain about how boring wrestler theme songs are with WWE working with Def Rebel. There was a time, back when Jim Johnston was in charge of the promotion’s music, that even a midcard wrestler had an iconic entrance. Now, some of the biggest stars will have their music hit, and you’ll have to wait for them to come out to remember who the theme is for.

There are exceptions to the rule, of course, when WWE doesn’t use Def Rebel. Cody Rhodes’ “Kingdom” by Downstait gets everyone shouting “Whoa!” and CM Punk’s “Cult of Personality” by Living Colour will never get old. “Voices” is loved just as much, so for whoever had the bad idea to change it, they’re lucky they didn’t eat an RKO out of nowhere.
