UFC legend Randy Couture has thrown his support behind boxing icon Mike Tyson in the lead-up to his highly anticipated clash with YouTube sensation Jake Paul. Couture’s endorsement comes as a result of Tyson’s “scary” training footage, which has left many convinced that Paul may be in for a rude awakening come fight night.
Couture, a former two-weight UFC champion known for his expertise in crossover fights, draws from his own experience of welcoming boxing world champion James Toney to MMA in 2010 at UFC 118. In addition, Couture also continued to fight at an advanced age, retiring at 47 after his three fight winning streak was halted by Lyoto Machida. Speaking to talkSPORT’s MMA YouTube channel, Couture expressed confidence in Tyson’s abilities, stating, “Jake Paul has certainly got his hands full with Mike Tyson. Even at his age, Mike is as explosive as he ever was… he’s firing on all cylinders now.”
Acknowledging Tyson’s relentless training regimen showcased on social media, Couture emphasized the formidable presence Tyson still commands in the ring. “Watching the training footage of Mike Tyson, you have flashbacks of him in his prime and it’s pretty scary, pretty remarkable,” Couture remarked.
Despite being 60 years old himself, Couture hinted at a willingness to step into the ring with a younger opponent for the right price. However, he believes Tyson’s motivations for accepting the challenge from Paul go beyond personal gain. “I think there’s a little more at stake here for Mike,” Couture noted. “He’s fighting for boxing in many ways.”
