Highlights

  • Kenny Omega’s return to AEW after health scare shows determination and unwillingness to retire from wrestling.
  • Omega’s battle with diverticulitis raised questions about surgery options and potential impact on his career.
  • The recent AEW Dynamite episode hinted at Omega becoming an authority figure on TV, despite uncertainty about his wrestling future.

Last December, former AEW World Champion Kenny Omega found himself in a tag team with Chris Jericho, known as The Golden Jets. After a Dynamite promo, Omega was heavily criticized for the promo being one of AEW’s worst ever segments, but as it turned out, there was a reason. Omega was dealing with an extreme amount of abdominal pain, rushing to the hospital the next day to find out that he had diverticulitis. He hasn’t been seen in AEW since, as speculation swirled about whether the Best Bout Machine will need surgery, or if he’ll ever even wrestle again. Finally, on the May 1 Dynamite, Kenny Omega returned to AEW, where he talked about his current condition and just how close he came to dying.

Omega talked to his hometown Winnipeg crowd, admitting that he’s never been good at talking about sickness, injuries, and weakness. He spared the fans the gory details, but said he spent 10 days in the hospital, with the doctors telling him that he was lucky because he was 24 hours from dying. Omega’s main concern was getting back to wrestling, but he was told that it wasn’t so simple. They needed to get what was inside of him out of him, but if they were to do surgery now, he’d have to wear a colostomy bag for 6–12 months at least, and maybe even for his entire life. If he chose to ignore his illness and not get help, then his abdomen would be a ticking time bomb that could go off with any hard impact to the region. He’d end up having to get the surgery anyway, or even risk death.

Kenny Omega confessed that it’s been hard to watch wrestling since the bad news, admitting that he was scared and wondered if he’d have to retire. Then he watched Dynasty, where Swerve Strickland made history as the first Black AEW World Champion, and where Will Ospreay and Bryan Danielson put on one of the greatest matches. He said it made him shake because he was going through withdrawal. Omega made a promise to himself and the fans that his career isn’t over until he exhausts every option. If there’s any percentage chance at all, even if he’s wearing a colostomy bag, he will wrestle again.

The latest AEW Dynamite came to a shocking end when The Elite and a returning Jack Perry violently attacked Tony Khan.

The Elite Attacked Kenny Omega On Dynamite

The Elite attack Kenny Omega on a stretcher on the May 1 AEW Dynamite

Kenny Omega then called out The Elite’s horrible actions against Tony Khan, telling the Young Bucks that he too is an EVP and has power in AEW just like they do. This led to Kazuchika Okada coming out, and an interesting moment, where Omega told the Rainmaker to give him a couple of months and they’d meet in the ring again. Eventually, the rest of the new Elite came to the ring and attacked Omega, then again backstage while he was being stretchered out to an ambulance.

There is no timetable for when Kenny Omega will be able to wrestle, if he will ever again, but Dynamite showed that he’s not ready to say goodbye and goodnight to competing just yet. Could we possibly be in store for Omega vs Okada one more time at All In this August in London? Until then, Dynamite heavily hinted that Omega will be playing an authority figure on TV.
