FORMER Dublin forward Ryan O’Dwyer reckons April is too early to start the hurling Championship.
The Leinster SHC medallist and former All-Star nominee reckons the condensed campaign does little to promote hurling.

He said the GAA is pushing the game ‘down into the dark ages’ because of the decision to go with a spring start.
Dublin and Wexford met in the warm sunshine last Sunday but O’Dwyer noted they got lucky with the weather and claimed this is the ‘totally wrong’ time for hurling.
O’Dwyer said: “It’s the national game and they’re already condensing it so much to facilitate the club championship.
“Yet they’re pushing it down into the dark ages kind of because they’re not trying to promote the game. There’s a window there during the summer and they’re not trying to promote it at all.
“I know it was a phenomenal day last weekend, best day we’ve had all year, but the last four months leading up to it have been rain, rain, rain.
“For me, the time of the year to start the Championship is wrong.”
Dublin came from behind to draw with Wexford last weekend and O’Dwyer acknowledged that the Model County were the better team.
The Dubs now have the opportunity to capitalise with a trip to Carlow tomorrow presenting them with a great chance to stay unbeaten.
O’Dwyer told the Wexford Hurling podcast: “You have to hand it to Dublin and the belief that they had in themselves that they could stay fighting until the end against Wexford.”
