Devin Haney Reveals Cause for Ryan Garcia Loss, Calls for Rematch on Fair Grounds

Highlights

  • Despite his first defeat, Devin Haney showed sportsmanship in defeat and expressed interest in a fair rematch with Ryan Garcia regarding weight conditions.
  • Oscar De La Hoya confirmed there will be no rematch between Haney and Garcia, despite initial reports. Haney now looks ahead to his upcoming fight.
  • Ryan Garcia, eyeing redemption against Gervonta Davis, may move up to the 147lbs division due to ongoing weight struggles, seeking new challenges.

WBC super-lightweight champion, Devin Haney suffered his first defeat to his amateur rival Ryan Garcia. The loss came as a shock as Haney was the heavy favorite to win, partly due to Garcia’s antics leading up to the blockbuster fight. The fight took an unexpected turn as Garcia missed the 140lbs weight limit. Haney, the reigning champion, expressed his belief that Garcia’s weight issue contributed to his defeat, marking the first loss of his professional career.

The anticipated bout was salvaged through last-minute negotiations after Garcia’s failure to make weight. Haney claimed that Garcia honored the press conference bet and paid him $1.5 million. Despite Haney’s resilience, Garcia’s relentless assault saw him drop the champion three times, sealing victory by points.

Taking to social media following the defeat, Haney extended a sportsmanlike gesture, expressing his desire for a fair rematch under agreed-upon weight conditions. Haney, however, dismissed rumors of a broken jaw and hinted at a possible return to the ring before the year’s end.

“Ryan, despite the circumstances was victorious that night and that’s fine. I do feel like weight played a role in it but only Allah knows. I would love to run it back and give the fans a FAIR fight within an agreed weight.”

“With that being said.. I am currently enjoying time with my family & friends as well as making up my days of Ramadan. Thank you to all my supporters & everyone involved in making this event happen. After I finish making up my days of Ramadan I will tell you guys what’s next!”

Ryan Garcia Reveals Health Concerns Were a Hoax After Devin Haney Victory

Ryan Garcia revealed that he has fooled the public in a recent interview.

While Garcia verbally committed to a rematch post-victory, he quickly reversed his stance in a subsequent interview. In addition, Garcia’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya responded to Haney and said there will not be a rematch, writing in his IG comment section, “Good luck with Eddie but there will not be a rematch. Good luck in your career and good luck with Eddie a European promoter trying to make it in the US.”

Haney, retaining his world title belt due to Garcia’s weight discrepancy, will likely fight his mandatory Sandor Martin at the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Garcia eyes redemption against Gervonta Davis, whom he suffered defeat to in 2023. Considering his weight struggles, Garcia may contemplate a move up to the 147lbs division in pursuit of new challenges.
