Dark Side Of The Ring Fans Dub Sensational Sherri Episode One Of The Best Ever

Five seasons in, Dark Side of the Ring’s creators are still doing fantastic work.

Highlights

  • Dark Side of the Ring’s latest episode covered the life and career of former WWE Superstar, Sensational Sherri.
  • Fans of the show have labeled the episode the best of the season so far, and potentially one of the best Dark Side episodes ever.
  • The episode includes information a lot of fans didn’t know about, including Sherri leaving her three-month-old son to pursue a wrestling career.

Dark Side of the Ring season five continued this week as the docuseries covered the life and career of Sensational Sherri. A trailblazer in women’s wrestling long before the women’s revolution, Sherri Martel had to make unthinkable sacrifices to reach the heights that she did in the wrestling business. Like so many others from that era, Sherri died way too young, passing away in 2007 from a drug overdose at the age of just 49.

One Of The Best Episodes Ever

Despite the path Sherri paved for today’s female stars, the WWE Hall of Famer isn’t mentioned enough in the present day. That’s part of the reason why the Dark Side episode detailing what she did and what she went through is being lauded by a lot of fans as the best of the season so far, and potentially the best episode of Dark Side of the Ring throughout its entire five-season run.

Dark Side Of The Ring Shares X-Ray From Brutus Beefcake’s Parasailing Accident

Makes it even harder to believe Beefcake survived this, let alone went on to wrestle again.

There are episodes of Dark Side that struggle to avoid retreading old ground due to the topics covered already being talked to death in wrestling circles. The Montreal Screwjob is a great example of that. However, Sherri has been overlooked so often that the bulk of her episode revealed information most fans didn’t know about. Her and Jake Roberts being an item early on in her career, for example, or Sherri leaving her three-month-old son in favor of pursuing a career in wrestling.

Learning About Sensational Sherri

Despite leaving him as a baby, Sherri’s son Jarred is part of his mom’s episode and has nothing but glowing things to say about her. He shows off photos he has of her, revealing that his earliest memory of Sherri is being shown a picture of her in a magazine. It wasn’t until Jarred had turned three that he was even told who his mother was. The end of the episode is incredibly emotional as he and his stepmom discuss Sherri choosing wrestling over him, and that despite that, he doesn’t hate her for it.

A tremendous effort from the Dark Side of the Ring crew to create an episode five seasons in that hits this hard and has already been labeled some of the best work they have ever done by a lot of fans. Up there with its Owen Hart and Chris Benoit episodes, the latter of which is currently its highest-rated on IMDb. There are still two more epsidoes to come in season five – Sandman next week, and then Black Saturday: The Rise of Vince as the finale. I’m guessing that last one will be very interesting considering what’s going on with Vince McMahon right now.
