Carlow Nationalist — Threatened to put ex-wife in a coffin

A MAN who threatened to put his ex-wife in a coffin was handed a suspended sentence last week when he appeared before Carlow District Court. The man, who is in his 50s, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, for contravening a safety order in November 2023.

The case, which was held ‘in camera’ as a family law matter, was heard by Judge Geraldine Carthy in January. She heard that the man and woman were going through divorce proceedings and that a safety order had been put in place. She heard that during one incident, the man had threatened to put his ex-wife “in a coffin”, which put her in fear.

Last week, Judge Carthy noted that breaching a safety order was a serious offence, before giving the defendant a suspended sentence. She also ordered him to engage with the Mend organization, which helps men with their anger management, to be of sober habits and to be of good behaviour.
