It goes without saying that a sizable portion of pro wrestlers nowadays are nerds. Some wrestlers of the older generations may not be entirely thrilled about that, but that’s definitely the reality. On any given week of WWE programming now, you will probably see the likes of Zelina Vega, The New Day or other wrestlers showing off references to video games, anime or comic books in their presentation. And as a person whose main hobbies include gaming and comic books, this is awesome. But that also means that people like Xavier Woods exist who can not only whip me in physical competition, but in digital competition too.

WWE Came Around To Montreal In May 2018

Xavier Woods Was Looking To Play Some Video Games

As a WWE fan living in Quebec, whenever the company came around to Montreal for a show at the Bell Centre it was always a big deal. Local fans whisper amongst themselves that they saw X wrestler at the gym or Y wrestler at Starbucks but as I was scrolling through Twitter, I saw that WWE’s biggest gamer Xavier Woods was coming to Montreal in search of an arcade. He was looking forward to hanging out with fans after the show. This was my moment to play video games with one of WWE’s best.

The location was set for Arcade MTL in the Mont-Royal area of Montreal, a place that I had been to in the past and was familiar with. While Woods was proclaiming to stomp everyone in NBA Jam, I was looking forward to facing him in Mortal Kombat 2 as I know he’s a huge fan of the series.

Xavier Woods Came To Arcade MTL

Truth be told, that episode of Smackdown I went to go see on May 1st, 2018 wasn’t that great. It featured the infamous Big Cass promo where he brought out a little person dressed as Daniel Bryan to mock him (a promo which would contribute to WWE’s decision to release Cass in June 2018) I was so wired to catch Woods after the show that it was all I could think about. After the show, I made a beeline to Montreal’s subway system and arrived at Arcade MTL as fast as my legs and the city’s public transport could take me. While it took a while for Woods to make it, eventually he arrived through the doors of the arcade to a loud ovation from all the fans packed in the venue. Before he sat down to play however, he chowed down on two of Quebec’s most iconic dish: poutine. I guess it must have been a cheat day.

10 Wrestlers Whose Physiques Were Integral To Their Characters

Many wrestlers have great physiques, but these particular stars’ bodies were the most integral part of their characters.

In wrestling, it’s often said how much your physique and size matters to your presentation. While Xavier Woods isn’t really considered a “big” wrestler by most fans’ standards, seeing these athletes in person makes you rethink your life choices very fast. Woods’ upper body dwarfed everybody else in the room and the man had to walk sideways everywhere he went to avoid knocking over tables and drinks. He truly was massive, but I was undeterred! I would whoop his butt in Mortal Kombat. Fight!

Xavier Woods Isn’t To Be Messed With In Mortal Kombat

  • Xavier Woods is very talented at playing Mortal Kombat.
  • Let the world know, that he can be very cheap with his sweeps.
  • Friendly barbs were thrown throughout the match, but Woods was a class act.

As I let the big boy eat his poutines (wrestling fans, if your favorite wrestler is eating, please don’t bother them), I knew that I would be the first brave soul to challenge him to a few round of Mortal Kombat once he got finished with beating some folks in NBA Jam. Once he was done, I introduced myself to the WWE Superstar and laid down the challenge to face Woods at Arcade MTL’s MK 2 cabinet. And although the first couple of rounds were close, once Woods got his groove with the stick, I was being spammed with sweeps and thrown about like it was a Braun Strowman squash match.

It is worth noting that Woods definitely brings the WWE flair for dramatics to his casual game-playing. We went back and forth with friendly taunts and barbs as we exchanged blade swings, spear throws and fireballs across Outworld and Earthrealm. It totally threw me off my game and that’s why I lost 2 out of 3 games to him. Totally.

Xavier Woods Wasn’t Done With The Taunts After Winning

Woods Took To Twitter To Roast Me Once More

Though I did get my head bitten off by Woods’ Liu Kang, I just had to go on Twitter and defend myself from the loss that nobody online knew I even suffered. But Woods wasn’t having any of it, and that spammy gamer has no shame about the tactics he used to defeat I, but a lowly Montreal native wrestling fan!

That would be the last of my encounters with Xavier Woods but one day if he ever wants to take me on in Mortal Kombat once again, I shall answer the challenge… and probably still won’t block low until after the third sweep.
