Hell froze over at Survivor Series 2023 and CM Punk did something wrestling fans assumed we would never see him do – return to WWE. The PLE was over, about to come to a close, and then his music hit. Cult of Personality, the same music Punk has been using for more than a decade. However, it’s been revealed this week that had WWE been left to its own devices, a different theme would have played to signify Punk had returned to WWE.
Changing CM Punk’s Entrance Music
That’s according to Living Color’s lead singer, Corey Glover. Living Color is the band behind Cult of Personality, and during an appearance on Drinks With Johnny, Glover revealed WWE’s plans to change Punk’s music for his return (H/T to SEScoops).
They had their own music division of the WWE and they were gonna have somebody make up a song that sounded similar to Cult of Personality. But that was gonna be his entrance music. [Punk said] ‘No, I don’t want that. I want the real thing.’ He’s like one of the talent that actually got that in his contract that wherever he goes, that goes with him.
Just the thought of Punk’s music hitting at the end of Survivor Series but it not actually being Punk’s music sends a shiver down my spine. The pop from the crowd was instantaneous because everyone knows exactly what his music sounds like. Had it taken a few seconds for fans to register who it was coming out, the moment wouldn’t have hit in the same way.
A Cult Of Personality
Punk switched his music to Cult of Personality after infamously absconding with the WWE Title following Money in the Bank 2011. It has followed him everywhere since, even used as his entrance theme in UFC and AEW. Punk clearly has a deal with Living Color, or whichever record company owns the rights to the song, that allows him to use it wherever he goes. Either WWE didn’t realize that, or it didn’t want Punk to use the same theme he had been using in AEW a few months prior.
Punk isn’t the only former AEW star to bring his entrance music with him, though. Cody Rhodes continues to use Kingdom. Not only did that make the moment even bigger when he returned, but it continues to be a massive part of his overall package. It’s also almost certain that had WWE made a Cult of Personality-like theme for Punk, it would have been composed by Def Rebel. The musical duo is fairly unpopular with fans right now, accused of their generic sound leading to a lot of Superstar themes being more or less the same.
