The Epic Saga Between Kenny Omega And Kazuchika Okada Began In 2017

Kenny Omega Vs Kazuchika Okada Is New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Best Rivalry

The feud between Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada dates back to 2017 at NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom 11. Omega had just won the G1 Climax 26 tournament and earned himself an IWGP Heavyweight Championship match against the reigning champion, Kazuchika Okada. Okada and Omega wrestled for approximately 46 minutes and 45 seconds, which at that time was the longest match ever contested inside the Tokyo Dome. Both men threw everything at each other and had amazing chemistry with breathtaking counters, transitions, strikes. You could tell both men had organic chemistry and were made for each other in terms of being competitors inside the squared circle.

Over 30,000 enthusiastic wrestling fans were in attendance, and by the end of the contest, they were just as exhausted as the competitors inside the ring. Kenny Omega gave Kazuchika Okada everything in his arsenal, but could not connect with the One Winged Angel. Okada finally put Omega down and defeated him in their first contest together.

Fast-forward to NJPW Dominion 2017, both men wrestled a rematch that somehow, someway, outshined their previous encounter at Wrestle Kingdom eleven months prior. Both Okada and Omega fought tooth-and-nail to the one-hour time limit draw. Two months later, they had yet another rematch at G1 Climax 27 with only a 30-minute time limit. Both men had yet another incredible contest, but at a much faster pace, ending with Omega getting the victory over Okada with the One-Winged Angel.

The final encounter to date between Omega and Okada took place at Dominion 2018, almost a year later. This was a 2-out-of-3 falls match, with Okada getting the first fall at the 28-minute mark. Omega evened the score with a One-Winged Angel to tie up the match a 1-1 at the 47-minute mark. Finally, after gathering all the strength he had left in his body, Omega took down Okada with a decisive V-Trigger to score the victory and the final fall.

Why Kenny Omega Vs. Kazuchika Okada Means So Much To AEW Fans

Kazuchika Okada Attacked Kenny Omega On AEW Dynamite

Given what we know about the history between Okada and Omega, there is no denying that another showdown between these two epic warriors is bound to happen. The rivalry is important to AEW’s fans and wrestling fans because it represents the true core of what pro wrestling is all about: wrestling! The athleticism. The storytelling. The drama. The excitement. The psychology. The flash and flare. A basic story of good guy versus bad guy. At its core, the rivalry is simple yet to the point and showcases what the wrestling business has evolved into.

With Okada signing with AEW and joining The Elite, Omega being “fired” by the group, then brutalized by the group despite still suffering from diverticulitis. Omega and Okada’s rivalry looks to continue. Prior to the heinous attack by The Elite, Okada and Omega had a brief confrontation that led to the two men debating as to who truly is “The Best Bout Machine”, with Okada laying claim to the title since Omega’s absence. Omega told Okada to give him a couple of months, and he would be ready to challenge Okada to a future rematch.

Forbidden Door And All In Are Possibilities For A Dream Rubber Match

IWGP Heavyweight Championship: Kazuchika Okada vs. Kenny Omega (NJPW Dominion 6.11 in Osaka-Jo Hall, 6/11/2017) - 9.68

Given the timetable that Kenny Omega hinted at on AEW Dynamite, we can all but assume that he may be ready to return to the ring by AEW/NJPW’s Forbidden Door pay-per-view event, set to take place on Sunday, June 30. This may seem a little too soon, but for our money, if AEW and Tony Khan were to play this smart, they should have the match take place at AEW All In in August at Wembley Stadium. This match could be the biggest draw that AEW can offer by that time.

One thing is for sure. Both men are deserving of the title of “Best Bout Machine”, but only one man can walk away with that title. The last three matches between Okada and Omega have left them at a 1-1-1 record, so this can truly be the rubber match of all rubber matches to finally put an end to the saga of Okada and Omega once and for all.
