When most wrestlers in their 50s don’t even think about stepping into the ring for another match, Chris Jericho has been performing regularly on AEW television. The former AEW World Champion is currently 53 years old and doesn’t seem like he’s stopping anytime soon.
Jericho recently became the new FTW Champion at AEW Dynasty. How did the fans respond? They responded with a “please retire” chant. Now, that rarely happens, especially against a legend like him. Even when The Undertaker kept returning to the ring, he wasn’t getting disrespected by chants like that. Should Jericho listen to the audience and lace up his boots?

Chris Jericho started his wrestling career in his teenage years. His first major promotion was WCW and he signed with them in 1996 but that’s not where he became a huge star. When he first debuted in WWE, that’s where he became a hit. His debut was iconic and is remembered by wrestling fans. Over the next few years, Jericho would become one of the top wrestlers in the Attitude Era and even win his first World Championship.
13 Biggest Mistakes WCW Made With Chris Jericho
Before becoming a seven-time World Champion in WWE & AEW, Chris Jericho worked for WCW. However, the company made some serious mistakes with Jericho.
Today, Jericho is a legend. He’s someone who puts over young wrestlers and is known to reinvent his character time and time again to stay relevant. But does that still hold true?
Chris Jericho Received A “Please Retire” Chant From The Fans At AEW Dynasty
Chris Jericho Defeated Hook At The PPV
At AEW Dynasty, Chris Jericho faced Hook in an FTW Rules match for the FTW Championship. Hook showed an impressive feat of resilience during the match when he kicked out of not one, but two Judas Effects. In recent weeks, Jericho and Hook teamed up for tag team matches and were known as Lion Hook. Jericho took on a mentor role during their alliance but later blamed Hook for not listening to him and costing them their trios match against Shane Taylor Promotions.
Hook’s father, Taz, got involved as well. When Jericho laid his hands on Taz — he merely shoved him — Hook felt it was time to step up and challenge The Learning Tree again. For those who don’t know, on the March 20 edition of AEW Dynamite, Hook defeated Jericho in a singles match.
At the pay-per-view, the Jericho vs. Hook match received some loud chants for Jericho, but not the ones he expected. Fans chanted “Go home, Jericho” and “Please retire” against the legend, and it’s definitely among one of the worst things to hear as a wrestler. It’s clear that Jericho has go-away heat from the fans, and since he’s a legend, many expect him to realize that it’s probably time to listen to the crowd.
It’s About Time Chris Jericho Should Start Thinking About His Final Run In AEW
Chris Jericho Can Do A Retirement Tour Like Many Others
On one hand, Jericho has already achieved everything he could in wrestling. He’s a multi-time World Champion, one of the most known faces in the wrestling world, the fans love him (or at least they did), and many even consider him the GOAT and credit him for the success of AEW to some extent.
In the last few years, however, Jericho’s magic has washed away; while he’s not in his prime anymore, he can still wrestle. But the thing with wrestling is, that most wrestlers stay longer than they need to. At one point, Jericho was struggling to perform in the ring, and that’s also when many fans expected him to retire.
The Jericho Vortex Has Become A Real Problem
AEW Fans Are Fed Up Of Chris Jericho Constantly Being Featured
Jericho is a veteran and has put over several younger wrestlers, but his storylines have become super repetitive and typically end in the same way. He loses one match, wins one, and then loses one again. While he’s creative and constantly tries to bring out new layers to his character, it’s probably time he takes a step back. AEW doesn’t need Jericho’s star power to survive, so he can take on a backstage role more to help the younger generation. Fans have even labeled that when anybody who enters a feud with Jericho, they enter the “Jericho Vortex” (a term that Jericho himself has trademarked.)
Fans’ problem isn’t with Jericho himself; it’s the fact that AEW focuses on him so much when they don’t need to. They’ve overexposed him to the point that even his die-hard fans have gotten tired of it. The “please retire” chant definitely seems a bit harsh, but most fans will agree that Jericho should go on a hiatus at the very least. He can then have one final run before retirement.
