Dale Finucane has admitted he “needed” the decision regarding his future to be “taken out of his hands”, with the Sharks star hanging up the boots due to concussion.
The 32-year-old suffered multiple head knocks in recent years and after medical advice, decided to end his 251-game career in the NRL.
Speaking on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show, Finucane explained the process that led to his decision to end his tenure at Cronulla prematurely and the conversations with doctors, lawyers, the Players’ Association and club officials.
“We sort of went through a pretty strict process … I had to medically retire based on the advice that I got,” the tough forward said.
“I seeked advice from the RLPA as well in terms of what it looked like if I went against that advice and I think it in terms of legalities and things like that, it was just impossible.
“That’s what I was looking for. I spoke to the lawyers at the RLPA. I got the medical advice.I just wanted to feel that if I look back in a year’s time, that I had no regrets about having a conversation with anyone, that could have helped impact my decision.
“I needed it to be taken out of my hands at the end of the day.”
Finucane is expected to remain part of the Sharks organisation, with the side travelling to Canberra to face the Raiders on Sunday afternoon.
