Trump and Biden neck-and-neck in Mich., Penn., Wisc.: poll

Former President Donald Trump and President Biden are virtually dead even in the key battleground states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, a new batch of polls found.

Trump, 77, narrowly edged out Biden, 81, in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin by a single percentage point, but lagged behind him slightly in Michigan by the same margin, CBS News/YouGov surveys found.

All figures were within the margin of error.

Voters in those key battleground states appeared to largely have a blasé view of the economy. Just 29% of voters in Michigan, 23% in Pennsylvania, and 25% in Wisconsin said the economy has gotten better in the years after the pandemic, according to the poll.

A sizeable 50% in Michigan, 50% in Pennsylvania, and 48% in Wisconsin said the economy has gotten worse. Meanwhile, 21% in Michigan, 27% in Pennsylvania, and 27% in Wisconsin believe the economy has largely stayed the same.

Overall, only 40% of voters believe that Biden “understands people like you” compared to 42% who said the same about Trump and 16% who said neither.

Voters also generally gave the economy under Trump higher marks than the current state of the economy.

In Michigan, 38% gave the current economy high marks compared to 62% who said the same about the economy under Trump. In Pennsylvania, 38% were positive about the current economy compared to 61% under Trump. And in Wisconsin, 42% were positive about the present conditions, compared to 62% under Trump, per the poll.

The CBS News/YouGov poll sampled 1,287 votes in Michigan with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, 1,306 in Pennsylvania with a MOE of 3.1 percentage points, and 1,245 in Wisconsin with a MOE of 3.2 percentage points.

The matchups in the new batch of CBS polling hews closely to the RealClear Politics aggregate which has Trump outpolling Biden by 1.9 percentage points in Wisconsin and 2.5 percentage points in Michigan — by training the current president by 0.1 percentage points in Pennsylvania.

Taken together, those three states have 44 votes in the Electoral College. For context, Biden topped Trump in 2020 with 306 to 232 Electoral College votes.

If Trump won all three of those states in the 2020 election, he would have been elected.

Nationally, Trump has a 1 percentage point advantage over Biden, according to the latest RealClearPolitics aggregate.
