Saudi Arabia continues with the construction of the megacity ‘The Line’, a linear project with a mirror effect that will link the Gulf of Aqaba with the desert. The builders hope that the first phase of said mega constructioncalled Neom, will be completed in 2030 because, in March of this year, They showed several images of how the work is progressing.
However, in mid-April, it came to light that The project suffered a budget cut because the investors lowered some forecasts, such as the number of citizens who would live in the city – going from a population of 1.5 million people to around 300,000 – or the promised kilometers of the project – dropping to 2.4 kilometers from the planned 170 kilometers – . Despite showing the progress of the megacity, ‘The Line’ project is being delayed to 2045 due to meeting deadlinesthe drop in the price of almost 75% – to about 15,000 million dollars – and the lack of approval of the budget by the sovereign fund of Saudi Arabia.
However, builders continue to work on The Line, despite delays and budget cuts. Furthermore, the Bloomberg newspaper reported that the general objectives of the project still stand.
What Saudi Arabia’s The Line megacity will be like
The country’s crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, assured when he presented the project that ‘The Line’ was going to “revolutionize our civilization.” He talked about how the super city would have two parallel blocks, each 488 meters highwhich will extend in a straight line for 2.4 kilometers and a width of about 200 meters.
The linear city is expected to have around 9 million rooms and its inhabitants will move via a super high-speed train. The idea is that this means of transportation moves the residents of The Line from one end to the other in 20 minutes maximum.
