More than 350,000 people collect pension contributory in Canary Islands, that is, the economic benefit received by all those people who, in general, have contributed to the Social Security regime. This is the case of those who receive retirement, permanent disability, orphanhood or widowhood pay. The amount each of them receives monthly is different and depends on various factors: the worker’s regulatory base, the years of contributions or the type of retirement (ordinary, early or deferred).
The average contributory pension in Spain, which more than 10 million people receive, It stands at 1,249 euros per month. This is how they collect it data from the Social Security System, updated as of January 1, 2024. Some municipalities have higher pensions than others. People who live in large cities – or near them – or near industrial estates tend to have higher benefits than residents in more isolated towns with hardly any infrastructure.
The canaries earn around 1,144 euros on average per month, below the national average. None of its provinces exceeds the figure for Spain, although one stands out above the other. Is about Las Palmas, where the monthly amount is 1,165 euros, making it the province with the highest tax rate in the Canary Islands. In the case of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a retiree who has contributed more than 15 years to Social Security earns around 1,123 euros on average.
The town with the lowest pensions in the Canary Islands
Valle Gran Rey is the municipality with the lowest average pension in the Canary Islands and the second most populated on the island of La Gomera. It belongs to the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and has around 700 retirees who collect the contributory benefit. On average, they receive 795 euros each month, well below the Spanish average. The more than 2,100 residents of Aldea de San Nicolás, located on the island of Gran Canaria, in the province of Las Palmas, charge about 50 euros more.
They are not the only municipalities that are below 900 euros per month. Social Security states that the municipalities with the lowest pensions in the Canary Islands are: Vallehermoso (844 euros per month), Agulo (863 euros), Buenavista del Norte (871 euros), Tanque (876 euros), Tijarafe (878 euros), Santiago del Teide (878 euros) or Guía de Isora (884 euros ), among others.
