The National Police has warned of the increase in complaints in Melilla due to cyber scams so far in 2024. Its spokesperson has detailed that those that are affecting the Spanish city in the north of Africa “are especially Internet job offer scamsbased on the complaints received in these four months.”
Although the aforementioned source has avoided giving figures of how many people are affected, it has assured that “the Melilla Police Headquarters has detected a significant increase in complaints about cyber scams so far this year compared to the same period last year”.
The police spokesperson highlighted that “an increasing number of criminals, some true professionals, use the Internet to obtain, through deception, money from their victims. In this sense, he has warned that “their objective is to obtain personal, banking, passwords, etc. information.”
Thus, he has asserted that they have detected a multitude of modalities to achieve this objective via telematics such as phishing –mass sending of SMS messages posing as a banking entity-, spoofing -redirect to a web page that imitates the original-, vishing -they report that their bank account has been blocked-, smishing -they inform you that you are a prize winner- and others.

As explained, these scammers publish these offers and require personal information to “complete the application.” They are offered with the phrase “how to make money”and is aimed mainly at unemployed people, offering a small remuneration for completing a series of tasks such as watching videos, choosing between two similar advertisements, making proposals, but always requiring a prior income.
