The garden of time | Espido Freire’s opinion on the MET Gala

The most interesting point of the lavish MET Galawhich little by little leaves the body judgment to the women in attendance and focuses on the spectacularity of the outfits displayed, is that this year has incorporated a book as a reference for the dress code; Let’s not forget that this is not just any red carpet, but a unique space with a statement of creative intentions, and, of course, a open economic interestas it could not be otherwise in the American cultural environment.

Here more is more and, for once, the discreet is penalized, those who do not take risks or those who impose their personality above the given instructions.

The garden of timethe story intended to give a clue to those who choose dresses for the stars, is a 1962 work by JG Ballard, a contemporary British author perhaps best known for his autobiographical novel The Sun’s empire (which Spielberg adapted) or the pornographic crash (which Cronenberg recreated), but which actually stood out for its look at science fiction: the MET has missed a golden opportunity to create an ephemeral reading club of famous people who gave, before or after the gala, in a short video, a touch of literary opinion after reading the story (can you imagine?), but I’m afraid that was not the intention.

From the combination of that little work in which a couple hides from the passage of time and their miseries in a garden with glass flowers and its exhibition, the MET, under the title Sleeping Beauties: the awakening of fashionpresents wonderful garments up to four centuries old preserved for their value or fragility.

And from there have come some unforgettable performances, like Zendaya’s, and others that are rather anodyne. These cultural crossings They make me immensely happy, it’s a shame they give so little.
