Spanish rectors suspend their agreements with Israeli campuses that do not express a “firm commitment” to peace

Spanish universities have taken a position on the conflict between Israel and Palestine and they have supported the “feeling” of the university camps that have been taking place on campuses in recent days to put a stop to the “escalation of violence.” In a statement released this Thursday, the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE) wanted to record its “deep regret” for the “very serious events” in the Gaza Strip and announced that will suspend all agreements with Israeli universities and centers who have not expressed a “firm commitment” to peace.

Specifically, and after meeting the governing board of the confederation that represents both public and private universities throughout the country, the Crue has committed to review and suspend “collaboration agreements with Israeli universities and research centers that have not expressed a firm commitment to peace and compliance with international humanitarian law”. Also this Thursday they agreed “intensify cooperation with the Palestinian scientific and higher education system”, as well as expanding all cooperation, volunteering and attention programs for the refugee population.

Furthermore, the rectors will ensure that in the “exercise of free expression” of the university students who have been protesting to demand the breaking of agreements with universities, organizations or companies that collaborate with Israel, “equally reprehensible” conduct does not occur. anti-Semitism or Islamophobia.
