South Sydney Rabbitohs official Brock Schaefer quits after Jason Demetriou sacking

The carnage at South Sydney isn’t over yet, with the sacking of Jason Demetriou leading to another official opting to walk away from the club.

Chief operating officer Brock Schaefer has quit his role as chief operating officer at the Rabbitohs, reports 9News’ Danny Weidler.

Schaefer has been at the club for the past decade, but is close with Demetriou and has now opted to move on from Redfern.

The club is attempting to get Schaefer to reconsider his decision, reports Weidler.

Schaefer was the second-in-charge at the Rabbitohs underneath chief executive Blake Solly and was well-regarded within the organisation.

The news of his decision comes as the club enters perhaps its darkest period in two decades, with Demetriou’s demise and reports of division at board level placing them under immense pressure off the field.

Results have been diabolical on the field as well, with the Bunnies dropping 16 of their past 20 matches. They sit bottom of the NRL ladder after eight rounds this year.

Ben Hornby will take over as interim coach in the wake of the decision on Demetriou’s future, with former coach Wayne Bennett tipped as the front-runner to take over on a permanent basis from next year.

The club are yet to formally announce Schaefer’s departure.
