The president of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Pagehas raised the tone against the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasunafter the controversy over the suppression of the National Bullfighting Award, describing his way of doing politics as “gauche divine“ (divine left) and regretting that they give cards of modernity in politics when 5% of the population votes for them.
During his speech to the media this Tuesday after meeting his Government Council in Azuqueca de Henares, García-Page gave more details about the alternative he offered – after learning of the ministry’s decision – to create our own awards in Castilla-La Mancha.
“We have already had contact with the main organizations in the country, and we have already agreed a meeting where we are going to propose defining exactly the model. It does not have to be exactly a literal replacement of the award that existed, but we are going to take advantage of the debate to do what is most convenient for the sector,” she indicated.
In any case, what is “very clear” to him is that he is not going to accept “under any circumstances” the theory of those who, like the minister, they give “modernity cards” within politics.
“That we are old enough and that here we are not people with berets, that we are not backward people, that some claim ownership of today’s Spain, which has left them at 5%“, he added, adding that if the remaining 95% do not vote for them – in reference to Sumar -, “they have a long way to go to meet the Spain of today.”
It seems to him “of immense arrogance” that the minister “wants to appropriate the concept of modernity in the country”, a modernity that “He goes with his beach barswith their core voters and with their commitments”.
It is in this context that he limits his Government’s maneuver to somehow make up for the suppressed awards. “We have not only seen the need to make a gesture. It is a gesture that has an intentionality. I respect the opinion of the Minister of Culture and I think that a sensitivity to protecting animals is growing in Spain. Perfect. But here the one who bites the sheep is the wolf, and It would not occur to me in political terms to put a wolf to guard the sheep“he stated.
After this, he recalled that Spain decided “by law” that the bullfighting tradition “It is cultural heritage.” In the same way that it is not understood that there is “a Minister of Housing who wants to put an end to housing” there cannot be, he says, “a minister in charge of taking care of the bullfighting sector who wants to mistreat it.”
“What is reasonable is that, sincerely and simply, the sector can sleep with the peace of mind that whoever has the legal competence to care does not have the purpose of stop being carried away by your hatred and put an end to it“added the president, who has insisted in any case that he is not proposing “any political war.”
