Shooting suspect leads cops on wild high-speed chase then survives suicide attempt

A crazed gunman led cops on a wild chase on a California highway before trying to kill himself with his own firearm, according to police.

The madness began around 11 a.m. Friday on Highway 101 in Windsor and ended on I-80 near Fairfield — about 40 miles southwest of Sacramento — with the suspect critically wounded, WKGO-TV reported.

Police said the man, who was not identified, fired off a shot at another car, shattering the rear window and narrowly missing a woman inside before he took off in a silver Toyota sedan.

Cops from the California Highway Patrol then spotted the car at a local shopping center, kicking off a high-speed chase that led cops throughout four California counties before it came to an end on the highway near Fairfield, which is about 40 miles southwest of Sacramento, the outlet reported.

Officers deployed spike strips to stop the car — but the incident was far from over.

Police shut down the interstate in both directions for hours as the gunman held officers at bay.

The standoff ended when the gunman shot himself with his own weapon in a suicide attempt.

However, WKGO said he survived and was listed in critical condition at a nearby hospital.
