The Phenomenal One Vs. The Heartbreak Kid
Shawn Michaels, known as Mr. WrestleMania for his legendary performances at WWE’s flagship event, shared his thoughts on competing in one last match at The Grandest Stage Of Them All during an interview with Gorilla Position.
He expressed genuine interest in facing AJ Styles, citing their similar wrestling styles and the potential for exciting in-ring chemistry:
“I think the one we really want to see is me and AJ. That’s where I go with. It’s also as the more talent comes along, you start looking at them. I always, I still do it now. I look at it like, boy, I can do cool stuff with him. I can do cool stuff with him. But I think AJ, I think AJ and I can get similar styles and stuff like that. So I always feel like that would be one people would want to see. So I think that would be my go-to in this particular moment.”
However, Michaels also acknowledged the reality that such a match was unlikely to happen due to his retirement and the passage of time since he last competed in a WWE ring.
Shawn Michaels Vs AJ Styles: Why This WWE Dream Match Never Happened, Explained
Shawn Michaels and AJ Styles are two of the all-time wrestling greats, but they never met inside a WWE ring.
The match had been rumored ever since AJ Styles signed with the company in 2016. In a WWE interview from 2019, Styles disclosed that he had asked for a match against Shawn Michaels, but HBK indicated that he was unable to make it happen at that time, especially since he had been retired for 6 years already.
Michaels also noted that even if the match were to happen in a video game like WWE 2K24, he joked that he might be too slow to even play it, emphasizing the physical toll that wrestling takes on the body over time:
“Well for one, I couldn’t even play it in the game now. That’s how slow I am. But I think that time has passed. It’s time for generations to move on.”
Even though he was retired, Michaels last wrestled at Crown Jewel 2018, teaming up with Triple H to face The Undertaker and Kane. Although it was a poor showing, HBK was still the best part of that match.
