Shannen Doherty And Tori Spelling Say Their Friendship Ended During ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’: “One Minute We Were Friends, And Then One Minute We Weren’t”

Shannen Doherty and Tori Spelling have a whole lot of history from co-starring on Beverly Hills, 90210, and the two attempted to hash out the “pivotal moment” during which their friendship went awry on Monday’s (April 22) episode of the former’s Let’s Be Clear podcast.

“It’s like one minute we were friends, and then one minute we weren’t,” Doherty said, ultimately claiming that she saw Spelling “being swayed” by certain people, per Entertainment Weekly.

Spelling agreed she’s “a swayer,” even deeming the quality her “downfall,” which Doherty reiterated by highlighting that she was “easily swayed.”

“And it was very frustrating for me because I always used to tell you like, ‘Yeah, Tor, have an opinion,’” she recalled. “Like, you’re smart, you’re funny, you’re talented. I loved you and I respected you and I wanted you to believe in yourself as much as I believed in you.”

As for their relationship’s “weak point” in which Spelling was most swayed, Doherty pointed to her co-star’s then-boyfriend, whom she called “abusive.”

Spelling echoed, “Abusive, an addict, yeah.”

Doherty added, “Verbally, physically,” and brought up a trip they took together with their boyfriends to Mexico.

“You called me crying from your room, and you came to my room,” she recalled. “There was a point — I specifically remember looking at you and saying, ‘You have to end it with him, or I’m going to actually kill him. Like, I can’t stand by and watch this.”

Claiming that Spelling “didn’t break up with him” and that she “stayed and [she] got tortured for a little bit longer,” Doherty said they “started drifting apart” afterwards. She ultimately noted that “there were so many really interesting moments about that time in the show and in our relationship.”

“I can’t recall the exact rift but I’m thinking all of those things sort of collided at one time, and maybe it was just so much pressure from other people that you know, the friendship just dissipated,” she continued. “And then you gravitated towards others.”

Also during their chat, Doherty recalled the tension that arose from her choice to pose for Rolling Stone with Jason Priestley and Luke Perry. Doherty remembered being approached in her dressing room by “several cast members,” including Spelling — whom Doherty said was “dragged” into it — who told her she “should not be doing covers without the entire cast.”

While Spelling couldn’t recall this encounter, she apologized, confessing that she “still can’t speak up for [her]self sometimes… at 50” and reflecting, “I think when I was young, it was whoever was the alpha more at the moment would sway me.”

Doherty has aired out other off-screen drama that took place on set, including a fight between her and Jennie Garth that had to be broken up by Brian Austin Green and Ian Ziering.

While speaking with Doherty on the March 4 episode of her Let’s Be Clear podcast, Green said “it got really rough and competitive” between female cast members, even claiming that it was “not an easy situation to watch.”

Beverly Hills, 90210 is streaming on Prime Video.
