RTE’s The Sunday Game forced into drastic broadcast change after backlash from GAA supporters

AFTER several days of build-up, there was no in-depth discussion on whether All-Ireland finals should revert to September on The Sunday Game.

RTE had promised that the ongoing point of contention would be debated in the wake of GAA President Jarlath Burns suggesting he’d be open to it.

In the run-up to Sunday's broadcast there were several calls for engagement across its social media channels

However, the prevailing response it got when publicising the segment and requesting feedback boiled down to people simply calling for them to ditch it altogether and focus on showcasing as many highlights as possible.

After all, it was an especially hectic weekend of Championship action across Gaelic football and hurling.

One reply that generated 128 likes stated bluntly: “It’s the third time you have posted this exact tweet up in the last four days.

“You’d swear you lot had an agenda. Packed schedule of Hurling games on today.

“How about you show some actual lengthy highlights of ALL the games?”

Meanwhile Off the Ball’s Will O’Callaghan posted a tweet on April 19 that garnered over 1.1k likes.

It read: “11 senior championship games on this weekend and The Sunday Game are planning a segment on whether the All-Ireland finals should be played in September.

“Just. Show. The. Highlights.”

In fairness to TSG’s show-runners, they did take note of which way the wind was blowing and changed accordingly.

The GAA’s flagship often cops more flak than other RTE productions due to an extra sense of ownership viewers feel over it according to ex-host Des Cahill.

And that quickness to criticise was in evidence again over the experimental way highlights of Mayo’s win over Roscommon were packaged.

All-Ireland winning captain with Kerry, Darran O’Sullivan, tweeted: “What was the point of that Roscommon-Mayo montage of moments and interviews? Just show highlights.”

Among the replies to that one another viewer compared it to a TikTok edit.

However, clearly the production was tight on time and that match had been shown live and in full on RTE Two earlier in the day.
