Roughriders Winter Classic: Football, hockey juggle lines in S’toon

Chris Getzlaf and Ryan Getzlaf are teaming up on the ice for the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation Winter Classic.

The second annual game — which features the two brothers, former Roughrider receiver Chris Getzlaf and former NHL Anaheim Ducks great Ryan Getzlaf — will be held Saturday afternoon at Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m. with the opening ceremonies at 12:30 p.m. and puck drop to follow.
Current Roughriders, Roughrider alumni and NHL alumni will be among the participants.

Current Rider players Peter Godber, Jorgan Hus, Brett Lauther, Brayden Lenius, Mitch Picton and Noah Zerr are expected to be in the lineup along with alumni members Chris Getzlaf, Andy Fantuz and Jason Clermont.

Former NHLers Ryan Getzlaf, Byron Bitz and Eric Gryba will also be suiting up.

Former University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s hockey stars Bailee Bourassa and Abbey Shirley, U of S Huskies football head coach Scott Flory, University of Regina Cougars football coach Mark McConkey and Saskatoon Blades assistant coach Wacey Rabbit (AHL) will also be in Saturday’s lineup.

Alongside the hockey game, there will be many family-friendly activities, giveaways and a post-game meet-and-greet opportunity.

A player autograph signing will take place at 3:15 p.m.

On Friday afternoon, starting at 3 p.m., 2021 SaskTel Plaza of Honour Inductee Andy Fantuz will be joined by Roughriders kicker Brett Lauther and receivers Brayden Lenius and Mitch Picton at the Rider Store signing session at Midtown Plaza in Saskatoon.

Tickets to the Winter Classic are available through Ticketmaster.

Children under 12 are admitted free with an adult ticket that can be purchased via Ticketmaster. Tickets are $25 for adults and teens ages 13 and older.
