OG Anunoby’s injury status unclear for Knicks after Game 2 exit

Jalen Brunson was able to return to the floor for the Knicks after suffering a worrisome injury Wednesday night, but the incredibly important OG Anunoby was not.

Anunoby was enjoying his finest offensive game of his postseason career with 28 points and four made 3-pointers, when he limped to the locker room with what the team said was a sore left hamstring with 3:27 remaining in the third quarter of the Knicks’ 130-121 Game 2 victory over the Pacers.

The two-way wing appeared to grab at the back of his leg after missing a shot several seconds earlier.

“I’m not sure [his status]. I haven’t talked to medical yet,” Tom Thibodeau said after the game. “I thought he was super-aggressive. He played really, really well, I thought, at the end of Game 1 with his defensive activity.

“And he picked up right where he left off, and I thought that was huge for us and I thought that’s what got us off to a good start.”

Anunoby had averaged 14.7 points in the team’s first seven postseason games, but the former Raptors forward erupted for 22 on 8-for-15 shooting in the first half Wednesday night, with Brunson missing the entire second quarter with what the team called a sore right foot.

Anunoby nailed a key 3-pointer and a layup before departing as the Knicks posted a 36-18 third quarter to carry a 99-91 advantage into the final period.

“It was huge,” Thibodeau said. “The way he got [his points], it was a little bit of everything. … He ran the floor, hit 3s, he was good in transition, he put it on the floor, attacked the rim, he was decisive. All positive things.”

The 26-year-old Anunoby, an All-Defensive team designee last season with the Raptors, also has contributed nine blocked shots and eight steals through the Knicks’ first eight postseason games.

Including the postseason, the Knicks improved to 26-5 in games in which Anunoby has played since a late-December arrival along with Precious Achiuwa in exchange for former first-round picks RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley.

With Mitchell Robinson out for the season with another injury to his left ankle, and Anunoby unable to play in the fourth quarter, Achiuwa contributed eight points in 28 minutes off the bench for the Knicks, including a key dunk with under four minutes remaining.

“I don’t know what the situation is [with Anunoby] as of right now. That’s between him and the medical and the team,” Achiuwa said. “But there’s always a next-man up mentality on this team. We have a bunch of winners who are going to come in and contribute in any way they can.”
