In 1979, WWE Introduced their Intercontinental Championship to the wrestling universe. Over the years, the championship has become one of the most coveted titles in the business. It has been held by countless future Hall Of Famers and has been used as a launching pad for main event success.
10 Worst Championship Reigns In WWE NXT History
WWE introduced titles to NXT when it became a developmental brand. While there were many great title runs, there were also some bad NXT title reigns.
Stars like Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin all saw their status in WWE rise as Intercontinental Champions. While some of the biggest names ever have had great runs as IC Champ, only a select few held the title for upwards of 200 days. An even more elite group of Intercontinental Champions pushed past the 200-day mark to have incredibly lengthy reigns.
UPDATE: 2024/05/08 14:30 EST BY ANDREW KELLY
The official longest Intercontinental Championship of all time finally came to an end at WWE’s biggest event of 2024 – WrestleMania 40, as Gunther lost the gold to Sami Zayn in a brilliant match. With this reign now being brought to a close at an astonishing and history-making 666 days, it makes sense to take a renewed look at the list of longest ever champions in this belt’s illustrious history. Additionally, we will look at some more long IC Title reigns of nearly 200 days. These newest entries cover three very different generations and eras for the Intercontinental Championship in WWE.

In 2021, Shinsuke Nakamura got his hands on the Intercontinental Championship for the second time. It might have been a long reign of 189 days, but he went missing for much of this reign, and then he would become the sidekick to Rick Boogs.
The Intercontinental Championship had perhaps never felt more like an afterthought than it did during Nakamura’s run with the gold here.

Although Pedro Morales would have other stints as Intercontinental Champion that we will get to later, his reign starting in 1980 was still a pretty long run, running for 193 days. Defeating Ken Patera, Morales became just the third ever Intercontinental Champion in WWE history.
He defended the gold against greats like Sgt Slaughter, Stan Hanse, Larry Zbyszko, and even Hulk Hogan.

Not only was Razor Ramon’s first reign as Intercontinental Champion pretty long, nearly reaching 200 days, but the reign was full of history too. This was the reign which saw the legendary ladder match with Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 10, which helped to propel Ramon to stardom.
He would wind up dropping the title to Diesel a month after defeating Michaels at WrestleMania.

Shinsuke Nakamura may have had a reign of over 200 days as Intercontinental Champion, but that doesn’t mean to say it was any good. In fact, Nakamura’s time as champion was severely underwhelming despite its length.
He defeated Finn Balor at Extreme Rules 2019, but his reign was filled with time off-screen being treated as an afterthought. In terms of televised title defenses, Nakamura put the belt on the line just four times in six months, showcasing just how infrequently the title was featured. The most recent design of the IC Title was birthed during this reign, which made it slightly notable.

Shawn Michaels won the Intercontinental Championship three times, and his longest reign started in October of 1992 when he dethroned the British Bulldog.
Michaels outlasted challenges from Virgil, Marty Jannetty, Buddy Wayne, Tatanka, and Bob Backlund, but in truth this title run didn’t bring out the best of Michaels, whose cowardly heel character didn’t allow him to have the show-stealing matches that he would be known to have over the years.

The Intercontinental Championship can often help make a star, and that was the case for Randy Orton, whose 210 day reign with the gold helped to legitimize him as a singles competitor.
He first dethroned RVD for the belt, and went on to defend against an array of notable names like Booker T, Edge, Chris Jericho, Shelton Benjamin, and Cactus Jack, with the latter being a brilliant match at Backlash 2004.

10 Best Title Reigns In AEW History, Ranked
There have been many champions in AEW’s history. Some of those have been superior to the rest due to longevity, storytelling and match quality.
He ended the Honky Tonk Man’s record-breaking reign at SummerSlam 1988, though after a very uneventful run he dropped the gold to Rick Rude. At SummerSlam 1989, he won the belt back, and this reign was notable for him also winning the WWE Championship too, becoming a double champion.

Tito Santana appears more than once on this list, though because his reigns come one after enough, it makes more sense for him to have one singular entry. In 1985 he won the title from Greg Valentine inside a steel cage. This 217-day run saw him fend off Valentine, who wanted the gold back, in addition to Terry Funk, Roddy Piper, Randy Savage, Jesse Ventura, Bob Orton, and more, giving him a whole host of legendary opponents.
Tito Santana is one of the more underrated wrestlers of his era, with consistently great in-ring work that was ahead of its time. For this reason he was perfect for what was deemed as the “workhorse” title of WWE. He held the gold on two occasions, with his first being the longer one by just a couple of weeks, ending at 226 days. Santana defeated Don Muraco to become just the fifth person to ever win the belt. He would lose it to Greg Valentine in September 1984.

Patera’s one and only reign with the gold lasted 230 days, coming just short of Patterson’s time as champion. He would eventually fall to Pedro Morales after eight months with the Intercontinental Title around his waist.

He would go on to win the WWE North American Championship from Ted DiBiase in June of that year. From there, Patterson would go on to compete in a mythical tournament in Rio de Janeiro to be crowned the first-ever WWE Intercontinental Champion.
Patterson would eventually drop the North American title and it would quickly fade away, making room for the Intercontinental Championship to be WWE’s secondary title. Patterson would only have one run as Intercontinental Champion but he made the most of it. He’d hold the title for a whopping 233 days before dropping it to Ken Patera.

In the mid-80s, the WWE Intercontinental Championship gained a reputation for being the “Workhorse Championship.” While the WWE Championship was held by more charismatic, attention-grabbing stars, the Intercontinental Championship was typically reserved for some of the sport’s best ring generals. Sadly, by the 2000s, the title had lost some of its luster.
10 Worst WCW World Championship Reigns
WCW often faltered with the Big Gold Belt’s booking, and many World Champions suffered bad reigns because of it.
In 2011, Cody Rhodes set out to restore the title’s legacy a bit. That year, Rhodes reintroduce the classic championship design that made the title so beloved. He’d follow that up with an impressive 234-day reign as Champion. It would be the longest Intercontinental Championship reign in over five years.

When talking about pure athleticism, Shelton Benjamin might just be the greatest pure athlete to ever come through WWE. From an in-ring standpoint, Benjamin didn’t have many peers. He proved time and time again to be an elite-level performer inside the squared circle. Unfortunately, Benjamin didn’t possess the personality to go along with his wrestling skills.
The 29 Longest Championship Reigns By Women In WWE History
Many female WWE Superstars have had epic and lengthy title reigns. Which championship reigns stand above the rest?
Still, Benjamin achieved a lot during his peak WWE run. In October 2004, Benjamin would win the WWE Intercontinental Championship and embark on a 244-day reign as Champion. It would be the longest IC title reign of the decade. Despite never reaching main event status, Benjamin was one of the greatest Intercontinental Champions of his era.

The 90s saw some of WWE’s biggest stars leave the promotion and join WCW. As a result, a new generation of stars had to be built from the ground up to keep WWE competitive. One of the young talents who got their big break in the back half of the decade was The Rock.
After floundering as Rocky Maivia, The Rock would turn heel, join The Nation Of Domination, and begin his ascension towards the top of the WWE card. The Rock’s first stop on that journey was recapturing the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Although he was basically handed the title by Steve Austin, The Rock would go on to defend it for a grand total of 264 days. He’d also be the first IC Champion to hold the oval version of the belt.

Despite all the gifted workers who held the WWE Intercontinental Championship during the 80s, the decade ended with The Ultimate Warrior as champion. After The Warrior won the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 6, he would vacate his Intercontinental Championship. This would open the door for what many consider “The Perfect Intercontinental Champion.”
In 1990, Curt Hennig would win a tournament to claim the vacant Intercontinental Championship. His first run with the title would last an impressive 126 days. However, his second run as champion was even more impressive, lasting 280 days. Hennig’s second reign would end in a classic bout against Bret Hart at SummerSlam 1991.

The WWE Intercontinental Championship’s lineage goes back to late 1979. However, it wasn’t until around 1984, when Tito Santana was champion, that the title began being looked at as the “Workhorse Championship.” Santana’s first Intercontinental Title victory would end a lofty reign. Santana himself would go on to have an over 200-day reign before being dethroned by Greg “The Hammer” Valentine.
Valentine would go on to be a great heel champion and would certainly keep up the title’s reputation as the “Workhorse Championship.” Valentine would hold the Intercontinental Championship for 285 days before dropping it back to Santana inside a steel cage.

Today, championships in pro wrestling don’t mean what they used to. This is in part thanks to the hot shot booking that started taking place during the 90s. Every short title reign serves to discredit both the former champion and the title they held. During the early part of the WWE Intercontinental Championship’s history, that wasn’t a problem.
Out of the first 10 WWE Intercontinental Champions, only two had title reigns that lasted under 200 days. Don Muraco would be one of the competitors who wouldn’t reach 200 days, at least not in his first reign. Muraco’s first reign as WWE Intercontinental Champion lasted only 155 days. However, Muraco’s second run would last a jaw-dropping 384 days. He’d eventually drop the title to Tito Santana, who himself would embark on a long title reign.

With all due respect to every WWE Intercontinental Champion before him and after, “Macho Man” Randy Savage is the greatest Intercontinental Champion ever. Despite their being talented IC Champs before him, the championship’s reputation was essentially built on the back of Savage.
He would win the title from Tito Santana in February 1986 and go on to hold it for an incredible 414 days. Savage would drop the Intercontinental Championship to Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat in spectacular fashion at WrestleMania 3, in what many fans still consider the greatest WrestleMania match ever.

For many WWE fans, the modern era of WWE history started in January of 1984 when Hulk Hogan won the WWE Championship and kicked off the 80s wrestling boom. In reality, the promotion had been around long before that. Most WWE fans seem to only go as far back as the beginning of the Hogan era though. That leaves guys like Pedro Morales on the outside looking in as far as their legacy is concerned.
Morales is one of the best performers to ever work for WWE. During his time in the company, he won the WWE Heavyweight and Tag Team Championships once and the Intercontinental Championship twice. His second reign as Intercontinental Champion lasted 424 days before being ended by Don Muraco. Morales also has the distinction of being the first Triple Crown Champion in WWE history.

Today, the WWE Intercontinental Championship can be a bit of an afterthought. There’s no greater example of this than the fact that the title wasn’t even featured at WrestleMania 38. In the 80s though, the Intercontinental Championship was at the center of some of the company’s hottest angles. Furthermore, the title was often around the waist of one of the company’s best performers.
The Honky Tonk Man will never be touted as an elite grappler by any means. However, the man could generate heat like no one’s business. Honky’s heat-seeking antics were on full display during his 454-day reign as Intercontinental Champion. During that time, Honky defeated some of the company’s top babyfaces, usually with underhanded tactics, to keep his gold. Honky’s record reign would end at SummerSlam 1988 at the hands of The Ultimate Warrior.

Every Intercontinental Title Match Of Gunther’s WWE Career, Ranked
Gunther has been absolutely phenomenal as WWE’s Intercontinental Champion. How do each of his title matches stack up, when ranked?
From an in-ring standpoint, Gunther’s reign as champion has provided the highest quality of in-ring performances than perhaps any run with the title. Show-stealers against the likes of Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, Ricochet, Shinsuke Nakamura, Rey Mysterio, Braun Strowman and more have made this an all-time great reign. Even when he wasn’t defending the title, Gunther put on an incredible performance in the 2023 Royal Rumble, almost winning the match after being the final person eliminated by the winner, Cody Rhodes. For nearly two years he dominated his opposition, until he finally lost the gold to Sami Zayn.
