Clare Dunne, who plays Amanda Kinsella in the hit RTE drama series, was tonight’s winner for Lead Actress Drama.

Half a million Irish viewers watched the finale of season two, which saw Frank Kinsella, played by Aidan Gillen, shoot evil brother Bren dead — before blowing his own brains out.

But back in February, it was revealed that the hit RTE show will never return for a third season with its stars are all out of contract.

TV sources said it’s a “disaster” for RTE after the gangland drama entered the top five most watched shows on the BBC iPlayer earlier this year, alongside The Apprentice and EastEnders.

However, industry watchers now predict the Kinsella family will return for a third season after Kin was bought by Netflix.

Millions of viewers around the world will be lapping up the antics of the warring drug family when the gangland drama drops on the service on May 1.

Speaking at the IFTA Awards ceremony today, both Emmett J Scanlan and Clare said there was no news on the future of Kin but they are hopeful.

Emmett told the Irish Sun on the red carpet: “I hope it comes back… if it does I’ll be there in a heartbeat.”

After Clare received her award, the team were asked backstage: “Will Kin be back now do you think, now that it’s been picked up by Netflix?”

They were quick to respond: “Here’s hoping.”

Another asked: “If you knew then what you know now, it would be continued obviously?”

They explained: “The continued is out of our hands, it’s a bigger thing. But we’ve loads of support from everyone like RTE, so hopefully we’ll be back.”

And if the show does eventually return, producers are set to face a headache as the major young stars have aged.

Mark McKenna, who played Amanda’s schoolboy son Anthony, and Hannah Adeogun, who played Mikey’s estranged daughter, look all grown-up now.

Mark told The Irish Sun: “I was 18 when season two of Kin wrapped. I’m 20 now, so I do look different. The same for Hannah — she was 16 filming Kin. But this happens in a lot of shows. It’s like Stranger Things when one day you were watching a bunch of kids and the next season they all looked 25.”

Producers had intended to film a third season of Kin a year after season two aired, picking up from the death of Bren and Frank Kinsella.

BACK KIN BUSINESS

But with backers Bron Studios going bust, Kin was left in limbo.

However, that could end in the coming weeks with the sale of the show to a new broadcaster.

But the filming of a third season might not happen until 2025.

Mark told us: “I suppose they’ll have to move the action on a few years, to make it work — but the writing of Kin has always been amazing and I’m sure it won’t give (showrunner) Peter McKenna any difficulty.”

The Clondalkin actor joked that his character Anthony, who was first seen as a schoolboy, had already begun his transition into a career criminal by the end of season two.

Mark said: “He’d shot Glen Wright and his mate, then he ran over an innocent woman in the getaway car. Anthony was turning into Viking.

“The last scene was him admitting to his mum that he killed the poor women and shot the two guys. But he only had remorse for the woman he killed by accident.”
