- Turns out it was just Seth Rollins in Shield gear, and now Moxley has revealed what he was up to when the moment happened.
- The AEW star was in Japan at the time, sleeping through WrestleMania which meant he woke up to messages about what had happened.
The main event of WrestleMania 40’s night two was one of the most loaded matches in WWE history. The Bloodline Rules stipulation meant anything could happen, and more importantly, anyone could get involved. That meant not only did members of The Bloodline, including The Rock, stick their noses in, but John Cena and The Undertaker made cameo appearances to even the odds. There was also a brief moment when some of us really believed WWE had managed to get Jon Moxley back for the night.
The Shield’s Music At WrestleMania
As The Rock was about to whip Cody Rhodes with his Mama Rhodes belt, The Shield’s music hit. It was a moment that felt like an eternity as we all looked to the crowd to see if Moxley would be joining an incoming Seth Rollins. Turns out the distraction was Rollins alone, in his full Shield gear, and his moment was quickly stamped out by Reigns who hit him with a spear the second he stepped in the ring.
WWE Did Not Ask AEW About Using Jon Moxley For Its WrestleMania Shield Spot
There was never any chance of getting Dean Ambrose back for one night only.
In hindsight, despite the last few years proving anything can happen in wrestling, it was foolish of us to believe that Moxley’s moment could have happened. As for how the newly crowned IWGP Champion feels about fans thinking he might have returned to WWE, even just for one night, Mox shared his thoughts with Sports Illustrated.
I was asleep in Japan when that was going on [WrestleMania 40]. When I woke up, I had these messages saying, ‘I thought you were coming out.’ And I was like, ‘Coming out where?’ It’s cool that people thought it was me. But I was asleep.
Might We Ever See Moxley In WWE Again?
That’s right, not only was there zero chance of Moxley playing a role in the WrestleMania Sunday main event, but he was on the other side of the world, not even watching live. I’m assuming he’s all caught up now, and clearly Mox was taking the opportunity to sleep in while not at home where he is likely woken up early by his daughter on a daily basis. If my timezone calculations are correct, his music would have hit at about noon in Japan. In Moxley’s defense, he was likely suffering from a little jetlag and still on US time.
Moxley’s relationship with WWE and odds of ever returning make for an interesting discussion as his departure was unlike anything we have seen before or since. WWE announced Moxley was leaving but continued to use him, giving him an unofficial farewell tour of sorts. Mox has been signed to AEW ever since, being given the freedom to also compete elsewhere, hence his recent World Title win in New Japan. It would be cool to see him back in WWE one day, but someone like Mox is not only hard to predict, he’s also not driven by the same things as most others in the wrestling business.
