WWE unexpectedly released five Superstars at the end of last week. Xia Li, Xyon Quinn, Sanga, Veer, and most notably of all, Jinder Mahal. A former WWE Champion, it’s the second time Mahal has been released. The Modern Day Maharajah was released by the company in 2014 and then returned two years later. Mahal has been a WWE Superstar ever since up until this past weekend, and now some backstage have been joking about the 3MB man showing up in AEW.
Jinder Mahal’s Beef With Tony Khan
There’s naturally a very real chance anyone released by WWE eventually finds their way to AEW, particularly someone with the stock of Mahal who could potentially be quite the get for the number two promotion. However, according to PWInsider Elite (subscription required), some backstage have been joking about Mahal becoming All Elite so he can continue his feud with Tony Khan in person.
Tony Khan Makes Fun Of Jinder Mahal In Social Media Rant
In a surprise to no one, AEW President Tony Khan is mad at WWE again, this time over Jinder Mahal.
The joke stems from a shot Khan took at Mahal earlier this year. It was only three months ago that Mahal was given the chance to become World Champion, competing for the title in a match against former champion Seth Rollins on Raw. Khan questioned why fans were okay with someone who hadn’t earned a title shot competing for the belt, his comments fueled by perplexed fans who called out Khan for booking Hook in an AEW Title match.
Earning World Title Shots
Khan pointed to Hook’s rather impressive win/loss record in AEW, comparing it to Mahal who had barely wrestled on TV for months prior to his own title shot. Unlike most shots taken between people at opposing companies, Mahal didn’t veil his response in the slightest. The Maharajah called Khan out by name, claiming that since he’s a former WWE Champion, he can compete for a World Title whenever he sees fit. Mahal also noted the proximity of his title shot to the Royal Rumble, claiming he didn’t need to be in the match because he can challenge for titles whenever he likes.
Well, not anymore as Mahal is no longer a WWE Superstar. The wrestler is presumably under a 90-day non-compete clause which means whatever he does next, we’ll have to wait until at least July to see what that is. If Mahal and Khan can see eye-to-eye, and potentially even use their war of words as a way to introduce Mahal to the company, I think AEW would be a good landing spot for the released star. TNA would also be a good fit, especially if Mahal plans on sticking with Sanga and Veer and the three of them show up together whenever they appear next.
