Highlights

  • WWE initially planned for Cody Rhodes to win the Undisputed Title at WrestleMania but changed those plans for a number of reasons.
  • Saving the switch for a year later was done with making Reigns run and Rhodes win feel like a bigger deal.
  • WWE also wanted to use the year in between to turn Jey Uso into one of its top singles stars.

Cody Rhodes finally finished his story at WrestleMania 40, beating Roman Reigns for the Undisputed Title in what will go down as one of the most memorable WrestleMania main events of all time. WWE made the play to perfection, blocking out all of the complaints from fans who claimed Rhodes should have won the title the year before at WrestleMania 39. Turns out prior to that match, WWE agreed with those fans, and at one point, the plan to have Rhodes win a whole year before he did was cemented in place.

Reported in the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), it was confirmed that prior to WrestleMania 39, Vince McMahon decided Rhodes would beat Reigns for the title in the main event. Triple H was on board and it was seen as the culmination of a triumphant return following Rhodes’ pec surgery. However, as WrestleMania neared, discussions continued, and everyone involved in making the decision was eventually swayed to thinking Reigns should win the match.

Even though he’s not a part of the group anymore, Jey Uso doesn’t think The Bloodline is going anywhere.

It’s clarified in the report that this was not a classic case of McMahon changing his mind and throwing his weight around. The decision was dissected and everyone agreed having the title switch happen a full year later would be the better option. It would make the moment feel bigger, turn Reigns into one of the biggest stars of the modern era, and perhaps most interestingly of all, give WWE the chance to properly turn Jey Uso into a top-tier singles star.

Everything Worked Out

While it might feel a little like Rhodes was the only one chasing the title for the past year since his WrestleMania main events bookended the 12-month period, there was a stretch in the middle where some of us believed Uso might be the one to dethrone Reigns. Uso was the first person to pin Reigns since his title reign began in a tag match at Money in the Bank, and then the tag team specialist had his cousin beaten in the main event of SummerSlam only for Jimmy Uso to turn on him and cost him the match.

It might have felt like the wrong decision immediately after Rhodes lost at WrestleMania 39, but it’s good to know the idea was debated at length and everything WWE wanted to come from delaying the title switch for a year has come to fruition. Reigns’ run as champion has gone down in history as one of the best ever, Rhodes winning was a far bigger moment than it would have been a year prior, and the plan to turn Jey into a big singles star was an unmitigated success.
