Jermall Charlo Arrested and Charged with DWI After Collision

Highlights

  • Boxing champ Jermall Charlo arrested & charged with DWI, eluding, and hit-and-run in Pearland, Texas.
  • Charlo fled scene in Lamborghini, refused to comply with police orders. Blood alcohol content measured over limit.
  • Charlo’s WBC middleweight title stripped; Carlos Adames promoted. Adames expresses frustration at securing fights.

Former WBC middleweight boxing champion Jermall Charlo found himself on the wrong side of the law as he was arrested and charged with three misdemeanors, including driving while intoxicated (DWI), eluding and fleeing from police, and leaving the scene of a crash involving over $200 in damage, according to officials from the Pearland Police Department, as reported by NBC News on Tuesday.

The incident unfolded Monday night at 12799 Broadway St. in Pearland, a Houston suburb, where officers responded to a collision involving Charlo. Upon arrival, law enforcement observed a verbal altercation between the involved parties, revealed police spokesperson Chad Rogers. Attempting to evade the situation, Charlo reportedly fled the scene in his Lamborghini, refusing to comply with police orders to stop. However, officers managed to corner and apprehend him.

Further complicating matters, Charlo’s blood alcohol content was measured at over 0.15%, significantly surpassing the legal limit of 0.08% in Texas.

The 33-year-old champion was subsequently taken into custody and booked at the Brazoria County Jail. He was later released after posting a $9,500 surety bond.

Charlo, renowned as one of the premier boxers globally, boasts an unblemished record of 33 wins and no losses. His most recent triumph came in a catchweight bout against José Benavidez Jr. in November, where he secured a unanimous decision victory. However, he has yet to defend his middleweight belt since his unanimous decision win over Juan Macias Montiel in June 2021.

Anticipation had been building for a showdown between Charlo and Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez slated for September. However, the highly-anticipated bout fell through. In a surprising turn of events, Charlo’s identical twin brother, Jermell Charlo, who previously held the WBC, WBA (Super), and IBF light middleweight titles with a then-record of 35 wins and 2 losses, stepped in as a replacement, ultimately suffering a defeat by unanimous decision.

WBC Was Criticized For Not Stripping Charlo Earlier

Carlos Adames (23-1, 18 KO), the interim champion, has finally been granted full recognition as the WBC Middleweight titlist after a prolonged wait since his victory over Juan Macias Montiel in October 2022. Referred to as “Bronco,” Adames has openly expressed his frustration regarding the difficulties in securing fights, particularly as other sanctioning bodies typically do not recognize interim titles for unification bouts. Allegedly, his intended opponent, Nathan Heaney, declined to finalize the fight contract.

The elevation to full champion status may bolster Adames’ prospects in the ring. While a fight with WBO/IBF champion Janibek Alimkhanulyis on the table, a potential bout with WBA champion Erislandy Lara could materialize, given that both fighters are affiliated with the PBC (Premier Boxing Champions) promotional banner.
