However, Hozier has broken a new record after reaching the number one spot on the US Billboard charts.

The Take Me To Church singer is the first Irish act in over three decades to take the number one spot in the states.

Sinéad O’Connor’s Nothing Compares 2 U was the last Irish single to top the US charts back in April 1990.

U2 also had two number ones on the Billboard chart in 1987 with I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For and With or Without You.

While Gilbert O’Sullivan was number one with Alone Again (Naturally) for six weeks back in 1972.

Hozier released Too Sweet on March 22 alongside a series of unreleased tracks from his latest album Unreal Unearth.

The 34-year-old, whose real name is Andrew Byrne, has now seen the song hit number one in countries such as the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

Last week, the tune became number one in Ireland after initially debuting at number five.

And it has now remained at the top of the Irish charts for a second week in a row.

Taking to social media during the week, the singer thanked his fans for their support on the new single.

In a video posted to Twitter, the megastar said: “Hey, it’s Hozier here. I just want to say a huge huge thank you to all the supporters, all the fans around the world.

“We are number one in Australia, number one in New Zealand, number one in Canada, number one in the US and a second-week number one in Ireland and the UK.”

The Cherry Wing singer revealed that the reaction to the track has been “absolutely staggering” and admitted he has been “taken massively by surprise”.

‘Means the world to me’

He continued: “But I just want to say thank you so so much for your support. I’m so thrilled that you’re enjoying Too Sweet and it means the world to me so thank you.”

Hozier first shot to stardom in 2013 with the release of his debut single Take Me To Church.

The song peaked at number two on the Billboard chart and was also nominated for Song of the Year at the 2015 Grammy Awards.
