A CORK couple who have been missing for 33 years were the subject of a recent major Crimecall appeal.
Conor and Sheila Dwyer were both in their 60s when they disappeared in 1991.
They were last seen on April 30 near their home in Fermoy, but the next day, a call was made to Sheila’s sister, making it the last time they were heard from.
There have been no sightings of them since, or their white Toyota Cressida with the registration 5797ZT.
Theirs is one of the longest-running missing persons cases in Ireland.
Others that remain unsolved include Philip Cairns, Trevor Deely and Ciara Breen.
In 2018, DNA testing in Wales found that remains found on the Welsh coast in 1985 were that of Irishman Brendan Dowley, who had also been missing since 1985.
Here Nicola Bardon looks at some of the longest-running unsolved cases here.
Aubrey Lane
The 22-year-old went missing from his Waterford home on January 6, 1988.
His full name is Benjamin Aubrey Lane, but it is documented he went by his middle name.
Most read in The Irish Sun
He was last seen five days after leaving Waterford when spotted on Patrick Street, Cork.
It is thought he may have travelled from Rosslare Harbour to Fishguard.
A report on Missing Persons said he may have been with another person when he left Rosslare.
Rory Aherne
The teen left his home in Drumcondra, Dublin, on September 24, 1984, but no one has heard from him since.
Rory, then 17, went out at around 8pm that evening and it was assumed he was meeting friends.
He would now be in his late 50s and the Garda notice for him on the Missing persons website said he could be in the North of England, France, or even as far away as Australia, in the building industry.
Sean Ryan
Sean was just 17 when he disappeared from his home in Downpatrick on September 2, 1998.
He was due to return to school that week but was spotted in Galway where he told people he was going away for a few days to clear his head.
The teen was then spotted by a Garda near the Cliffs of Moher, where he said he was going to a party.
That was the last confirmed sighting of Sean.
Christine Doyle
Christine is the oldest case on the Garda Missing Persons website, but little is known about her, or the circumstances that surrounded her disappearance.
The black and white photograph of the missing woman shows that she had dark hair but there is little else for investigators to work with.
She has been missing from the Rathmines area of Dublin since January 12, 1971.
Mary Boyle
The six-year-old remains Ireland’s longest missing child case and the second longest overall.
She disappeared from her grandmother’s home in Ballyshannon, Donegal on March 18, 1977.
She was last seen when she followed her uncle Gerry through a field while he went to a neighbour’s home, but turned back — never to be seen again.
Gerry has since died, and there has been no trace of Mary since.
Albert Timmons
On December 23, 1980, the widower went to meet a pal for a drink in the Viscount pub in Dublin’s Whitehall.
His friend did not turn up and the barman said he had one drink and left to pick up his children.
But the 58-year-old never returned to his Swords home.
His daughter Carol has said since that she thinks he may have taken his own life in grief after the death of his wife the year previous, but no remains have ever been found.
