I did up my ’embarrassing’ mess of a garden using DIY – I used an often forgotten shop that’s miles cheaper than B&Q

AFTER a damp and dreary winter, the warmer weather has finally arrived.

Though most of us are just getting into the garden, one man has revealed how he transformed his ‘embarrassing’ outdoor space into his own ‘little paradise’.

Sharing before and after photos on Facebook, Macauley explained that his garden was a mess

Even better, Macauley Sykes did this with budget buys from Costo and Selco.

Recalling the incredible transformation on Facebook, the amateur gardener revealed that he and his partner has spent five days ‘knee deep’ in mud.

Showing the before photos in the DIY On A Budget Official page, Macauley admitted that they’d been desperate to make over the space and even called it ‘embarrassing’.

He told the group: “Our garden was absolutely embarrassing.

“A couple of months ago my partner and I decided we would get it done.”

He added: “We spent five days in the rain – knee deep in mud – but now she says that she couldn’t be happier. Worth it.”

While most of us were avoiding April showers, the couple underwent the difficult of clearing their outdoor space – had become a dumping ground for odd gardening supplies.

To make matters worse, Macauley and his partner had the arduous task of levelling the lawn as well.

Removing the remaining grass and shrubs, they then set about marking out flowerbed using sleepers sourced from Selco.

With one meter long sleepers starting from as little as £19.99, this is an easy way to create boarders in your space without too much effort.

He later told the group: “The sleepers for the beds are from Selco, but also sold at Travis Perkins for the same price – miles cheaper than B&Q!”

As the boundaries where marked, Macauley could annual shrubs and spring flowers like daffodils for a pop of colour.

The couple then used remaining material to add raised flowerbed – which would be the focus of the entire garden.

Having finished the initial landscaping, it was time to focus on filler in the larger areas with gravel.

Rather than just adding the stones to the bare soil, the amateur gardeners decided to lay tarpauling to create a more even surface.

With the garden nearly complete, they then sourced accessories to furnish it including a bench and cushions from Costco.

Though the retailer currently has a similar bench listed for £339.99, you can often find secondhand garden furniture on apps like Facebook Marketplace – for just fraction of their regular retail price.

In addition to the extra setting, the couple also added a small water feature and bird feeders to make the space even more tranquil.

Needless to say, others in the Facebook group have been astonished by the transformation.

One impressed member wrote: “Little piece of heaven right there.”

Another gushed: “Wow what a great job you have done there. Looks beautiful.”

Meanwhile, others were desperate to recreate the now viral garden.

“Can I ask where the white canopy thing is from your house?” asked a third, while a fourth joked: “Lovely…come and do mine.”

It just goes to show that you don’t need to spend a fortune to create your own slice of paradise.
