Despite being undefeated and rated No. 1 in the U Sports national rankings, the women’s team won’t have any home playoff games this season due to a change in the Canada West playoff format.

Instead, they will head to Abbotsford, B.C., for the Canada West women’s playoffs Feb. 22-25, while the men go to Winnipeg, Man. for the Canada West men’s playoffs that same week.

In the meantime, the U of S squads have four games each on the schedule to wrap up the regular season.

That includes a pair of games on home court this weekend, Friday and Saturday, at the Physical Activity Complex, against the provincial rival University of Regina Cougars.

It’s part of the U-Prairie Challenge between the two schools.

The women play at 6 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday at the PAC, with the men’s games to follow at 8 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY AT HOME

Also at home this weekend is the Saskatchewan Huskies women’s hockey team.

The Huskies (17-5-1-1) host the Mount Royal University Cougars (18-6-0-0) on Friday and Saturday.

Game-time is 7 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday at Merlis Belsher Place.

Saskatchewan and Mount Royal are tied for third place in the Canada West conference standings with 36 points apiece.

Meanwhile, the Saskatchewan men’s hockey squad (16-5-1) is in Calgary to face its Mount Royal (19-5-0) counterpart Friday and Saturday.

GAMES AGAINST TRINITY RESCHEDULED

It’ll be a busy stretch for the Huskies, who will fly out of Calgary for Langley, B.C. to play a pair of rescheduled games against the Trinity Western University Spartans on Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning.

“It’s the only time we could do it,” said Huskies head coach Brandin Cote.

The Huskies fly directly out of Calgary and avoid the first leg of flights from Saskatoon to Calgary, and back, after their games against the Cougars.

“The flights are good so we leave mid-morning (Sunday) and get there mid-morning, have a little bit of rest and play 2 p.m. Pacific time and then it’s a short turnaround,” noted Cote. “They just don’t have any priority of ice there. It’s 9 a.m. Pacific time (Tuesday).

VOLLEYBALL TEAMS IN CALGARY

The U of S men’s and women’s volleyball teams are both in Calgary to play the University of Calgary Dinos.

Saskatchewan is currently 12-6 and fifth in the Canada West men’s conference and 7-11 and tied for seventh in Canada West women’s volleyball.

The top eight teams in each will qualify for playoffs.

TRACK AND FIELD AT JIM DALY BISON CLASSIC

The U of S track and field team is in Winnipeg this weekend for the Jim Daly Bison Classic in preparation for the upcoming Canada West track and field championships Feb. 23-24 at Edmonton.
