Andorra la Vella“We don’t have anything new, we didn’t detect their presence today.” This is how Guillem Casal, Government spokesman and Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Environment explained, that there is no news of the bear that was seen in Ordino. Casal has warned that “it is a situation that must be taken with respect” because “the risk in the mountains is always zero, with bears and without bears”. However, the minister recalled that these plantigrades usually try to avoid human presence, that they tend to make large trips in the spring because it is a time of reproduction and that it is a species in danger of extinction. The person in charge of the Environment portfolio has assured that no predation of the bear seen has been recorded.
The animal remains in unknown whereabouts. Casal assures that there is no danger because the Banders and Environment body carry out regular and punctual controls, more based on the finding of clues or traces. During 2023, bones were observed on 11 occasions and documentation was obtained with samples of hair, droppings, footprints or photo-trapping images in all cases. In 2024, the raids of the bones were also monitored and in February they saw one, just as in March and April two were observed. This Monday they saw a trail in the Comapedrosa area where they were able to collect the hair. On the same day, Banders’ body made a first observation in the Encodina area, documented with a video that was published on the networks. This Tuesday they went to the place where they saw him the day before and later a video was published by a citizen in which he appeared in the Cortinada area. As they have found traces on both occasions, they will be able to determine if the bear seen in Encodina and the one in La Cortinada are the same. And everything points to that being the case.
