Actor Don Warrington previously hinted at the danger that lay ahead of his character during an interview on BBC Breakfast, saying: “From the moment I got the script I read it, I saw it, I got shot. I accepted it.”

The dramatic moment happened as the crime drama kicked off for its thirteenth season on Sunday.

Fans have eagerly been awaiting Death in Paradise returning to screens after the Christmas special, and were shocked to see Commissioner Patterson left fighting for his life.

After a tense conversation with colleagues, he headed outside alone for some fresh air.

This is when a gunman took the opportunity to fire a shot at the cop.

Fans flocked to Instagram to share their hopes that the Commissioner pulls through.

One person pleaded: “Oh no. He can’t leave. He is an original OG of the cast.”

Another added: “I will cry if Selwyn dies. Don’t do this to me. Please.”

A third exclaimed: “The commissioner had better recover or I’m on the next plane to St Marie!”

Shantol Jackson, who plays Sergeant Naomi Thomas, previously predicted the response viewers would have to the surprising storyline.

She sympathised: “The Commissioner is a beloved character and has been with Death in Paradise since day one – it’s kind of a thing where you never know when someone might go.

“I think the audience’s first reaction will be, ‘Oh my gosh, is Don leaving the show?’ and ‘Is the Commissioner actually going to die?'”
