The Mexican Senate was the scene of a controversial event. It was about sacrifice of a chicken inside its facilities in an event promoted by legislator Adolfo Gómez, of the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena).
In a video, posted by journalist Leticia Robles on her X account, you can see how a group of people practice a ritual with the birdwhich consists of cutting his neck and collecting his blood in a jar.
The same video was available for a time on YouTube, but was removed from the platform for violating some of its rules, such as showing “content in which a person maliciously mistreats an animal and causes it to suffer.”
This ceremony would be framed in “The Offering for the Day of the Rain (Tláloc)”according to local Mexican media.
In fact, Gómez, who belongs to an indigenous community, in statements to the newspaper 24 hourshid behind the second article of the Mexican Constitution, which recognizes native peoples and regulates their uses and customs.
“Of course I know the laws. How can I not know them if I am here, where the laws are made, and I am one of those who make them?” argued the legislator when asked if he knew that the regulations of the City of Mexico, where the Senate is located, seeks to “avoid mistreatment, cruelty, suffering, zoophilia and deformation” of animals.
In fact, in its article 25, it details that “using animals to celebrate rites or traditions that affect their well-being is prohibited.”
Even so, Gómez accused reporters of “not understanding” the beliefs that defends and encouraged them to “review and see” the history of Mexico and its native peoples.
Given the commotion generated, the presidency of the Upper House, which falls to the also Morenoist Ana Lilia Rivera, disassociated herself from what happened and placed all responsibility on Gómez.
“The presidency of the Board of Directors had previously communicated to the aforementioned senator the express refusal to authorize the entry of any type of animal into the building,” he stated in his X profile.
Thus, he stressed how the organization has worked “intensely” in favor of the animal rights and reiterated that his presidency “does not support in any way” the sacrifice carried out, so he will “take the appropriate disciplinary measures” with Gómez.
The reactions from the rival bench did not take long and the senator and head of the office of the opposition candidate Xochitl GalvezKenia López, linked the sacrifice of the bird with the current Mexican Executive, headed by Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“This is Morena. Death and destruction”he said, because “putting the image of death and now killing animals describes this Government.”
The animal organization AnimaNaturalis, for its part, announced that it will present a criminal complaint against the senator before the Attorney General’s Office of Mexico City for animal abuse.
