- The Rock’s surprising return and heel turn shook up WrestleMania 40, leading to speculation of a future match with Cody Rhodes.
- Cody Rhodes believes being a great champion could entice The Rock to have a match, potentially at SummerSlam.
- Speculation suggests The Rock vs. Cody Rhodes could happen before a potential showdown with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 41.
The lead up to WrestleMania 40 had many shocking moments. While many expected to have the rematch of Roman Reigns vs Cody Rhodes from WrestleMania 39 for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, what we did not expect was for The Rock to return, briefly take Cody’s WrestleMania spot, then turn heel and align himself with his cousin. The Great One did some of his best character work ever in the past few months, and while the Raw after WrestleMania hinted that he and the American Nightmare could have a singles match sometime in the future, nothing is guaranteed.
During an interview with Good Morning Britain, the new Undisputed WWE Champion was asked if he will have a match with The Rock at some point. Cody Rhodes said:
“I wanna say yes. I think it’ll really come down to can I be a good champion or a great champion, Roman Reigns was a great champion, and will that be enough to entice The Rock? This run, it’s a whole new generation, a whole new locker room. Seth Rollins, Becky Lynch, myself, Rhea Ripley, all these people. I think the more we keep this, the better we do, the more chances it lures Rock back into the fray.” (h/t

Why Cody Rhodes Will Stay On Raw After The WWE Draft
The next WWE Draft is soon, but although Cody Rhodes holds a title that was featured on SmackDown, the American Nightmare needs to be kept on Raw.
When Will Cody Rhodes Vs. The Rock Happen?
The Rock’s encounter with Cody Rhodes on the Raw after WrestleMania 40 made it feel certain that WWE is looking into giving these two a singles match sometime in the future. The only question to be answered is, when will it happen?
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has said of The Rock’s WWE return:
“We were told there was a chance of him doing a match late this year, but the Rhodes match was tentatively for Mania, whether Rhodes is champion or not.” (h/t

Speculation of Cody Rhodes vs. The Rock happening at WrestleMania 41 means that WWE would be holding off on the dream match of The Rock vs. Roman Reigns for another year until WrestleMania 32. By then, however, The Rock will be 53 years old, and for all we know, Roman Reigns could be retired or off in Hollywood. The Rock is preparing now to film his next movie, The Smashing Machine, about the life of UFC fighter Mark Kerr. There is a chance that he will be done in time to return for another match later this year.
If that’s the case, the best option would be Cody Rhodes vs. The Rock at SummerSlam, then having an angle which sets up The Rock vs. Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 41. With the SmackDown segment of Solo Sikoa taking out Jimmy Uso and introducing Tama Tonga, who spoke about the orders of the Tribal Chief, WWE is hinting that The Rock may have taken over the group behind the scenes. Whatever happens, don’t be shocked if we see The Rock vs. Cody Rhodes this year.
