Cheryl Burke says being the ‘breadwinner’ hurt her marriage to Matthew Lawrence

Money talks — but it won’t save a marriage.

Former “Dancing With the Stars” professional Cheryl Burke candidly reflected on her marriage to Matthew Lawrence during Thursday’s episode of iHeartRadio’s “Amy & T.J.” podcast when she theorized that being the “breadwinner” in their relationship didn’t help it.

“I learned that you can’t buy love,” she told hosts Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes, who lost their jobs at “Good Morning America” in late 2022 when their secret romance came to light.

“It’s like, it made me feel good, but then it didn’t necessarily make the relationship good,” she reflected.

“I tried to not obviously, I didn’t buy my ex-husband, but, like, I definitely would say I was the breadwinner,” she further explained. “Like, I supported us, and I don’t think it’s black and white.”

“It’s like, it made me feel good, but then it didn’t necessarily make the relationship good,” Burke, 39, added.

In November 2022, she announced her exit from “DWTS” and likened it to a divorce.

“I am overwhelmed. I’ve been trying to hold back the tears, I would say, because I wanted to really perform the best I could. Now with all of that behind me, it’s bittersweet,” she told Page Six after she took her final bow.

“[It’s been] so hard,” she continued. “This is like another type of divorce, but an amicable one.”

During her interview with Robach, 50, and Holmes, 46, on Thursday, Burke said leaving the dancing competition show was more difficult than going through her divorce.

“I mean hands down. You can’t compare,” she noted.

Burke, who said she was happily single in January 2023, stated on the “Amy & T.J.” podcast that she’s not sure if she’s ready to look for love again. But when she is, she knows what she wants.

“I want someone who wants to evolve,” she noted. “[Someone who can] take accountability when needed … someone who’s supportive.”
